6 1. Fill a container with 1 gallon of water (represents all of the water in the world) 2. Take out 2.5 % (3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon) and place it in a clear container (represents all of the freshwater in the world) 3. Of this amount, remove 70% (2 tablespoons) and place it in a clear container (represents water trapped in glaciers or too deep to access) The remainder – less than 1 percent of the Earth ’ s total water supply – is left to support human needs for agriculture, drinking, and washing, as well as for lakes, rivers, and freshwater ecosystems.

9  1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water.  In Africa, two out of five people lack clean water.  An American taking a five minute shower uses more water than a typical person living in a developing country’s slum uses in a whole day.
