Writing a Summary

A good summary gives only main ideas. It does not include details. Here are a few tips for you to follow: 1. A summary presents only the main points. You analyze the text and separate out the main points from the examples and details that support these points. 2. You should be accurate in presenting these main points.

3. You need not state the points in the same order as that of the text, especially if rearrangement makes things clearer. 4. A summary is often much briefer than the original.

Example: Of course, the bathroom would be dark, too, but Stuart’s father had thoughtfully tied a long string to the pull-chain of the light. The string reached clear to the floor. By grasping it as high up as he could and throwing his whole weight on it, Stuart was able to turn on the light. To get to the washbowl, Stuart had to climb a tiny rope ladder which his father had fixed for him.

Main points: 1. how Stuart turned on the light in the bathroom 2. how Stuart got up to the washbowl Details: (the crossed-out parts above) Summary: Stuart turned on the light in the bathroom by pulling a long string tied to the pull-chain of the light. Then, he climbed up a rope ladder to get onto the washbowl.

Exercise A: Work in pairs. Read the reading of this unit again. Make a list of the important facts of this text. Then, compare your list with your classmates’. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ 1. Stuart was an early riser. 2. Every morning after getting up, he did his exercise and then went to the bathroom to wash up.

__________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________ _______________________________ 3. He turned on the light in the bathroom by pulling a long string tied to the pull-chain of the light. 4. He climbed up a rope ladder to get onto the washbowl. 5. He laid his toothbrush, soap, washcloth, and comb neatly in a row. 6. He turned on the water by pounding the faucet with a hammer. 7. He brushed his teeth and moistened the washcloth.

Exercise B: Combine all you have listed above into a one- paragraph summary. _____________________________________ _________________ ________________ _____________________________________
