Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Key words: sustainable, recycle, alternatives

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE

GCSE CORE Objective What is meant by sustainability? Success Criteria By the end of the lesson I: know what sustainable development is know how families can help to conserve resources by recycling, making homes energy efficient & avoid using cars can explain the consequences of using up the world’s resources

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE about doing more (but doing it with less Sustainability is not about doing less – it is about doing more (but doing it with less). Sustainable development means finding ways of reducing this need for resources and finding alternatives that are less polluting. It means looking after the environment. go on forever without damaging the environment Sustainable technologies could go on forever without damaging the environment for our grandchildren or our grandchildren’s grandchildren.

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Unsustainable technology Uses resources that cannot be replaced Produces wastes that cannot be broken down Steals from the future to feed the present

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Before crude oil and plastics were available, whales were a major source of raw materials for many countries. A valuable resource? oil cosmetics, candles and machine oil teeth buttons and piano keys bone fertilizer meat human and pet food skin belts, shoes and luggage IS THIS SUSTAINABLE?

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Sustainable technology Uses resources that are replaced regularly Produces wastes that break down harmlessly Protects the future

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Are countries justified in claiming whales need to be killed to protect fish stocks? Phytoplankton are single-celled plants that grow in nutrient-rich coastal areas. Krill are tiny shrimp that feed on the phytoplankton, and which are the main food source for many sea creatures, including fish and whales. Protecting fish stocks Whales catch krill and small fish using a special filter in their mouth.

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Sustainable? Or not? Air travelMotor cars FarmingFishing

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Possible Alternatives For fuel. Combustion of fossil fuels in cars and aeroplanes are the biggest produces of carbon dioxide gas. Why is this a problem? For fuel. Combustion of fossil fuels in cars and aeroplanes are the biggest produces of carbon dioxide gas. Why is this a problem? Recycling what we already have eg plastics, aluminium cans. How will this help?Recycling what we already have eg plastics, aluminium cans. How will this help? Reusing land that has already been used for eg to build new homes on brown fields (land that had previously been used for building rather than on green fields). Why?Reusing land that has already been used for eg to build new homes on brown fields (land that had previously been used for building rather than on green fields). Why?

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE How could you make electricity generation more sustainable? Use renewable energy sources Use non-polluting energy

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Support more public transport systems Encourage purchase of local resources and products Use more energy-efficient vehicles Build towns without need for cars How could you make transport more sustainable ?

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE How could you make house building more sustainable? Use natural, low-energy materials in construction Avoid waste-generating techniques Make houses smaller and more energy efficient

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE How could you make waste collection more sustainable? Recycle more Avoid landfill wherever possible Reduce waste creation (e.g. excessive packaging) Use waste for new products (e.g. making fleeces out of plastic waste)

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE What are pesticides? insecticideskill insects kill unwanted plants (i.e. weeds)herbicides kill fungi (e.g. moulds and mildews)fungicides The major problem with using pesticides is that they can accumulate along food chains, poison wildlife or washed off fields and into lakes and rivers, where they cause eutrophication A pesticide is a substance used to prevent, destroy or repel pests. Different types of pesticides include:

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Eutrophication

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE 140,000 miles of hedgerow Agriculture causes the destruction of important habitats. Since 1949, the UK has lost: Sustainable countryside The rising population means that more food must be grown, but this means that more land must be used for farming and agriculture. 95% of its lowland grassland 30-50% of its ancient lowland woods 40% of its lowland heaths on acid soils.

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Deforestation destroys habitats, but wood can still be harvested in a sustainable way by: What is sustainable forestry? replanting – new trees are planted to replace those that are cut down. coppicing – harvesting the stems of young trees and allowing them to regrow. However, developing countries may not have enough money to invest in sustainable forestry. How could these countries be helped?

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Multiple-choice quiz

Biology 1b Evolution and Environment GCSE CORE Objective What is meant by sustainability? Success Criteria By the end of the lesson I: know what sustainable development is know how families can help to conserve resources by recycling, making homes energy efficient & avoid using cars can explain the consequences of using up the world’s resources
