1. UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI NAIROBI, KENYA

2. Background The University of Nairobi dates back to 1956, with the establishment of the Royal Technical College, which admitted its first students for technical courses in April of the same year. At Kenya’s independence in 1963, the idea of an inter-territorial University saw the creation of the University of East Africa and the Royal Technical College became its constituent College. In 1970, through respective Acts of Parliament, the three East African States created a University each. Thus, the University of Nairobi was born.

3. Colleges of University of Nairobi The university of Nairobi has six Campus Colleges headed by Principals. They are: - College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences College of Architecture and Engineering College of Biological and Physical Sciences College of Education and External Studies College of Health Sciences College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

6. Student and Staff Population Currently, the University of Nairobi has 50,000 students pursuing different levels of degrees and diplomas both on fulltime and part-time basis. These students are served by over 1,500 strong academic staff and over 3,000 technical, administrative and support staff.

7. Research Activities Research remains core in evaluating performance of both students and staff. Our academic members of staff are involved in numerous research activities individually or with collaborating partners. Our commitment to research is strengthened by the amount of investment and resources that we generate or receive. UoN has a research kitty of over Kshs 700 Million sourced internally and from collaborators.

8. Alumni As the largest University in East Africa, we have graduated more students than any other institution of higher learning in the region standing at 105,701. To tap benefits from its alumni, the University launched the University of Nairobi Alumni Association to utilize its networks.

13. Admission Requirements Admission requirements are set and approved by the Senate. Admission is open to students from all countries and is regularly advertised in the press and via the internet. The University has continued to use diversified educational modes of delivery which have included face to face lectures coupled with practicals, Laboratory, clinical and field work, distance education and e- learning.

14. Programmes and Links -UON has over 200 international linkages with various institutions all over the world -Nature of links: Student exchange, academic staff exchange, joint research collaborations. -Such linkages are governed by establishing various MoUs
