4 Objective: To encourage 4-H members enrolled in the horse project to expand in an area that is rapidly growing as a career and offering opportunities for many 4-H members To encourage 4-H members who do not have a horse but are interested in horses and related activities.

5 Eligible 4-H Age to Enter Contest: Junior (8-13) Senior (14-18) ( Age as of December 31 of current year)

6 4-H Horse Photography Contest Categories 1.Breed Promotion – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph showing the best qualities of a breed; the type of photograph that would be in a “specific breed magazine”; suitable for a story in a magazine or newspaper) 2.Action – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph showing ACTION/MOVEMENT of animal. A photo that catches the moment. Not a posed photo) 3.Non-Action – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph showing NO ACTION/MOVEMENT at all. Very relaxed. Can or cannot be a POSED photo) 4.Human Interest – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph that is creative, comical, something you would want to look at frequently, frame and hang on your wall, fine art type of photo. These photos can or cannot be POSED. 17 4-H Horse Photography Contest – Sample Photos That Do Not Fit Categories (35mm/Digital) Breed Promotion – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph showing the best qualities of a breed; the type of photograph that would be in a “specific breed magazine”; suitable for a story in a magazine or newspaper)  YES – it identifies the breed very well by showing the breed’s characteristics such as coat pattern!  NO – nice photo, but could be any breed of horse. 20 4-H Horse Photography Contest – Sample Photos That Do Not Fit Categories (35mm/Digital)  YES – this photo is creative, something that you would like to frame!  NO – great photo, but there is VERY LITTLE of the horse showing, therefore the horse is not the primary focus! This would be more suited to the regular State Photography Contest! Which photo is CORRECT for the category? Human Interest – HORSE or HORSE & PERSON (A photograph that is creative, comical, something you would want to look at frequently, frame and hang on your wall, fine art type of photo. These photos can or cannot be POSED. Try different lighting techniques)  NO – great photo of your barn cat but keep in mind that this is HORSE PHOTOGRAPHY! This would be more suited to the regular State Photography Contest!

21 Directions of How Photos Should be Turned in for Contest (35mm/Digital)

22 Photograph(s) MUST be mounted on an 8 x 10 inch white poster board (photos can be mounted on poster board with double- sided tape). Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria: Photograph(s) MUST BE submitted in a 5 x 7 inches format.

23 Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria continued: DIGITAL CATEGORIES (5-8) photo(s) MUST include both ORIGINAL and ALTERED photos and be mounted on separate poster board per instructions as above. If NO ALTERATIONS are made, then single photo entry is allowed. Suggestion: If submitting an altered digital photo, clip entries together and put “original” on the back of the unaltered photo.

24 Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria continued:  NO WRITING or DECORATIONS of any kind will be allowed on the front of the white poster board. My Colt Star X  DO NOT MAT or FRAME photograph(s). X

25 Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria continued: Each photograph MUST have a COMPLETED CURRENT entry form attached to back of poster board with the signature of 4-H’er, parent or guardian, and 4-H Agent. Agent must have seen and approved all entries prior to submission. (Entry forms are available from your county agent.)

26 Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria continued: 35-mm photographs are required for categories 1-4 Please use #5 Each 35-mm photograph (categories 1-4) MUST have the correct negative attached to the back of the entry in an envelope (do not cut negative). Negative number must be identified on outside of envelope.

27 Photograph(s) MUST meet the following criteria continued: Suggestion: If submitting an altered digital photo, clip entries together and put “original” on the back of the unaltered photo. Digital photo (category 5 - 8) can be altered and manipulated ONLY by the 4-Her submitting the entry. Digital photo (category 5 - 8) MUST have the CD attached to the back with all the photo files used to create the photo.

30 Rules for Horse Photography Contest: 1.Photograph(s) MUST have been taken since August 1, of previous year. 2.Photograph(s) MUST have been taken by the 4-H member submitting the entry(s). Agents should authenticate photos if the photographer is in the photo. 3.Photograph(s) that document 4-H horse-related activities are most desirable, but other horse-related activities may be submitted also. 4.Photograph(s) MUST have a horse as the primary focus of the picture! Not a picture of a barn cat, not a picture of a child on a hay bale, not a picture of a saddle, not a picture of a donkey or a mule, etc. Multiple entries in a single category by an individual 4-H member will subject all entries in that category to disqualification. 5.4-H’ers may submit ONE ENTRY PER CATEGORY. NO MULTIPLE entries in categories will be allowed. 6.Photographs may be color or black and white. Entry Deadline: 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday of State Horse Show

32 Rules for Horse Photography Contest Continued… 8. Entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. through 12 noon on Wednesday of the Sate 4-H Horse Championships in the Equine Center on the Sate Fair Grounds. Winners will be announced the next day. 9.Winning photographs will be kept for displays and returned the next year during the State 4-H Horse Championships. (negatives may or may not be kept). 10.Non-winning photos should be picked up after winners are announced. 11.Age divisions of contestants: a. 8-13 years old (age as of December 31, of previous year) b. 14-18 years old (age as of December 31, of previous year) 12.Awards: First Place (in each category)$8 Second Place (in each category)$5 Third Place (in each category)$3 *Junior Champion (*All first place junior winners competing) $25 **Senior Champion (**All first place senior winners competing) $25 (photorulesnew2006)

33 Rules for Horse Photography Contest Continued…. 13.Judging: Photographs are judged on the following criteria. Strict adherence to the above rules will also be followed. Picture Quality (focus, depth of field, placement of subject, lighting, etc.) 30 points Attracts and holds attention10 points Originality/Creativity20 points Content of photograph (appropriate to entry division, clarity of message, value, photo is subject to DQ if judges deem it is NOT appropriate for category) 30 points Presentation of entry (general appearance, correct mounting as stated in rules, completion of entry form, etc. Photo is subject to DQ if rules are not adhered to) 10 points TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS100 points (photorulesnew2006)
