3 What is Section 508? Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (amended in 1998 and codified in 29 USC § 794d) is a federal law requiring electronic technology used by the government to be accessible. 5 How does 508 affect ME? Section 508 requires Federal departments and contractors providing services or products to Federal agencies to provide Section 508 compliant deliverables. As participants of the HEN project we are required to develop, procure, maintain, and use electronic and information technology in a way that ensures that members of the public with disabilities have access to and use of information and data, comparable to that of the members of the public without disabilities. 6 Accessibility When you hear the word Accessibility, what types of disabilities do you think of? Vision – Blind – Low Vision Hearing – Deaf – Hearing Impaired Speech – Mute – Slurred Speech Motor control – Wheel Chair – Seizures – No Motor Control Slide 6

7 Considerations for Events What considerations do you need to make for planning events? Conferences – Plan appropriately. During registration be sure to ask if anyone has special needs. – Reserve buildings, rooms, and tables for wheel chair accessibility. – Label tables as “Reserved” in front or by screens for individuals with low vision. – Provide listening aids for the hearing impaired. – Secure Sign Language Interpreters for the deaf. – Have limited to no animation on presentation slides and presentations. 8 Considerations for Webinars What considerations do you need to make for planning a webinar? Webinars Days prior to webinar, ask if anyone has special needs and communicate with them to find out what they need to participate. For the Webinar, provide a telephone-based teleconferencing connection in addition to the VOIP. Record the presentation and prepare accessible versions of the webinar recordings. Remember that videos require captioning and a transcript if the webinar is made available online. Slide 8
