Romans Part 2 Lesson 5

The Law In chapters 1 through 5 Chapter 2:12-27 The Jew will be judged by the Law he sinned against vs. 12 Only the doers of the Law, justified vs. 13 Some Gentiles keep it without knowing it vs. 14 They show the Law written in their hearts vs. 15

The Law The Law is the embodiment of knowledge and truth vs. 20 Those who boast in the Law and break it dishonor God vs. 23 The Jews have the letter of the Law, but most break it vs. 23 True circumcision is of the heart, by the Spirit vs. 29

The Law Chapter 3:19-31 The Law speaks to those under it, but all are accountable to it vs. 19 Knowing what sin is comes through the Law vs. 20 Men are justified by faith, apart from the Law vs. 28 We establish the Law through faith vs. 31

The Law Chapter 4:13-16 Promise to Abraham and his descendants was not made through the Law vs. 13 If the Law keepers were the heirs, then faith is made void vs. 14 Law brings wrath: no Law, then no violation vs. 14

The Law Chapter 5:13,20 Sin was in the world and ruling men before the Law, but it was not imputed vs. 13 The Law came in so that transgression would increase. ** It increased because when the Law was given, breaking it also became sin ** Grace abounds more than sin vs. 20

The Law Romans 6 Now people are not under Law, but under grace vs. 14 Shall we sin more because of that? NEVER vs. 15

The Law Chapter 7 Whole chapter is directed to the Jews Believers, righteous, died to the Law vs. 4 Released from the Law vs. 6 We serve God in righteousness in the newness of the Spirit vs. 6 Our newness of life (6:4) is guided by the Spirit, not the Law

Paul’s Illustration Romans 7:1-4 A woman is bound to her husband, as long as he lives. When he dies, she is released The same is true of those under the Law Saved – released from the Law – our lives become new by the Spirit

Is the Law sin? May it never be!!! vs. 7 Romans 2:20 and 3:20 The Law says coveting is a sin Apart from the Law, sin is dead The Law is holy Commandment is holy, righteous and good The Law was not responsible for sin, I am

Galatians 3:19-29 Why the Law? Added because of transgressions Couldn’t impart life Tutor to lead to Christ He came, tutor is no longer needed True for Jew and Gentile – all are one in Christ

Romans 7:13-25 Did that which is good become a cause of death? May it never be!!! Sin became the cause of death The Law simply defined sin The Law is spiritual vs. 14 The Law is good vs. 16 Contrast: law of the mind-law of sin vs. 23

Who is the illustration Paul used? Himself, as a person who knows the Law The Law is spiritual-I am of flesh Law did not cause death – it is spiritual People, Paul, you, me, are flesh People are sold into bondage to sin vs. 14 Romans 6 One who is in bondage to sin has not died with Christ ALL believers have died with Christ

Romans 7:15-25 Paul did NOT teach that a believer can’t do what is right He taught that the good and spiritual Law didn’t bring death: sin did Sin dwells in the flesh, nothing good dwells there

Conclusions: verses 21-25 Evil is present in the one who wants to do good (the Law) Inner man concurs with God’s law The law in the fleshly body’s members is the law of sin – death There’s a war between the mind and the body Freedom comes through Jesus Christ

Romans 8 The Law of the Spirit of life in Christ sets me free from the law of sin and death vs. 2 The Law was weak because of man’s flesh vs. 3 Jesus took care of the problem vs. 3 Jesus condemned sin in the flesh vs. 3 The mind set on the flesh is not even able to subject itself to His law vs. 7

Romans 9, 10 and 13 The Law was given to Israel 9:4 Israel didn’t arrive at God’s righteousness because of a lack of faith 9:31 Christ is the end of the Law. 10:4 Love fulfills the Law 13:8,10

Concluding Statement Faith makes men righteous, and then they are doers of the Law instinctively, from the heart and by the Spirit, whether or not they know the Law
