When non Arabs started to enter Islam, they found some of the Arabic alphabet difficult to pronounce at it was not in their language. E.g. some of the Muslims used to read the letter ح to letter ه because that letter was the closest to the latter letter in their language.
IF the Quran was read as it was at that time then the Quran would have been lost and being read differently.
Ali ibn Abi Talib then asked Abi Aswad Ad Dualee أبي أسود الدؤليto put signs to show the vowels (fetha, dhammah etcc..) on the letters so the non Arabis know how to read correctly.
