3 Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy Application Process & Timeline  Applications will be available on February 20, 2015, at:  Kingman Middle School Office,  Elementary School Offices, and  Online  Completed applications should be returned by March 13, 2015, to:  Kingman Middle School Office or  Elementary School Offices  Please do not return completed applications to the District Office.

4 Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy Selection Process & Timeline  Selection will be completed by a five-member team consisting of:  Kingman Middle School teachers and administrators  Criteria used in the selection process include:  GPA (still being determined)  ATI Benchmark Results  A Rubric will be used to evaluate student responses to the questions on the application.  Conversations with the student and their current teachers.  Our goal is to screen applications within two days of submission.  Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received and determination selection will be completed in same order.

5 Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy Notification Process & Timeline  Notification will be done by letter.  Letter will be mailed within three days of submission of application and will include the following:  Indication if your child has been selected to attend the Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy, or  An explanation and supporting documentation for denying your child’s application to the Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy.

6 Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy Rules Governing Students and Parents  T he district office, along with personnel from both Kingman High School and Kingman Middle School, are currently working on determining the rules which will govern students and parents of the Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy. (All KUSD and KMS rules will always apply to any student who attends Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy. We are finalizing the criteria, for maintaining specific grades, GPA, and behavior expectations for our Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy students.)  Rules and pledges will be provided on the application.

8 What is STEM?  STEM is an acronym that stands for:  S = SCIENCE  T = TECHNOLOGY  E – ENGINEERING  M = MATHEMATICS

9 What will STEM look like at the Kingman STEM Preparatory Academy? Engaging, hands-on curriculum tailor-made for middle school students. Creating strong links to STEM by engaging and inspiring the STEM pathway and preparing them for Kingman High School STEM Academy learning and beyond.

10 Why is STEM Education a National Priority? The Department of Commerce predicts that STEM occupations will grow by 17% from now until 2018, compared to 9.8% growth for non-STEM occupations. STEM jobs pay between 26% and 40% more than jobs in other fields, depending on who you ask. “STEM instruction helps students in developing conceptual understanding in science and mathematical concepts, technical and engineering practices, and translates to all areas of learning.” -ADE State Technology Educators Association The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology found the U.S. must produce 1 million more STEM grads over the next decade to meet demand – a 34% increase over current projections, if nothing changes
