2 Compare the ramifications of World War II on South Carolina and the United States as a whole, including the training of the Doolittle Raiders and the Tuskegee Airmen, the building of additional military bases, the rationing and bond drives, and the return of economic prosperity.

3 Immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the US was anxious to retaliate against the Japanese Whose sneak attack had brought the US out of isolation & into the war in Europe as well as the Pacific

5 Group of bomber pilots Under the leadership of James Doolittle trained in Columbia Engaged in air attacks to be launched from aircraft carriers on Tokyo Attack helped lift the morale of Americans

7 Even before Pearl Harbor the US govt. were drafting young men into the armed services & preparing for war. Military camps established during WWI in SC reopened to serve as training bases for thousands of young men drafted into the armed services The Charleston Navy Yards increased production of destroyers

8 Helped to guide the Lend Lease Plan – Offered support to the allies in their fight against the Germans Later served as director of war mobilization SC & US began to climb out of the Great Depression as a result of govt. spending on war preparations

9 First African American aviators – Fighter Pilots Trained @ the Air Base @ the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama Commanded by white officers Supported allied invasion of Italy Assigned to escort heavy bombers on raids against strategic enemy targets

10 Air campaign was directed @ weakening Germany prior to D- Day invasion Several airmen earned the Distinguished Flying Cross Airmen proved that African American pilots could shoot down enemy aircraft as well as or better than white air crews. Af. Am. Soldiers served in segregated units commanded by white officers.

11 When they returned to the states many were determined to fight segregation Their bravery & sacrifice of other Af. Am. Members of the military opened the doorway for other Af. Am. To serve in the military & for the desegregation of the military in postwar period.

13 Many were not fit for service 1/3 of young white men & ½ of black men were either illiterate or in such poor health that they could not serve Startling indication of poverty in SC War brought some prosperity War mobilization meant more jobs @ home & the wartime population of SC cities grew w/ a resulting impact on area businesses Farmers = Shorthanded but women & children worked in the fields to bring in bumper crops

14 South Carolinians collected scrap metal & rubber for the war effort Used ration books to get their share of the short supply of food & fuel Bought war bonds to fund the war effort War is over – they had savings to use to buy cars & goods that were not available during the war When V-Day & V-J Day arrived – SC & US were poised to enter a period of prosperity
