Food Safety Expert Bioterrorism Research Students who earn a D.V.M. may go into these professions: Soooooo, this must mean that Doctors of Veterinary Medicine do more than give shots!

3 VETERINARY PRACTICE About 75% of all veterinarians in the United States are in private practice. *Companion Animal Practice (dogs, cats, birds, fish) *Food Production Animal Practice (cows, pigs, cattle) *Mixed Practice (sheep, goats, and whatever!

4 Specialized Animal Practice *Equine *Exotic Pets *Wildlife *Zoo Animals Specialized Medical Field *Surgery *Opthalmology *Dermatology *Oncology

5 TEACHING!! Nearly 3800 veterinarians are engaged in teaching at Colleges of Veterinary Medicine! In addition to teaching, veterinary school faculty members conduct research, contribute to scientific publications and develop continuing education programs to help graduate veterinarians acquire new knowledge and skills!

6 GOVERNMENT VETS Assist with the safety of food processing plants and our water supply. U.S. Food & Drug Administration determines the safety of medicines & food additives. Ag Research and Fish & Wildlife Service,E.P.A., and Natl. Library of Medicine & N.I.H.

7 RESEARCH Private Industry -discover solutions to problems that can help human beings AND animals… -discover solutions to problems with disease in livestock and help farmers with the food sources in our country.

8 MILITARY VETERINARIANS WORK IN LABORATORY ANIMAL MEDICINE PATHOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY APPLICATIONS MANAGE COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL MONITOR AND CONTROL INSECT-BORNE DISEASES MEDICAL TREATMENT AND CARE FOR PETS OF ANIMALS FOUND ON MILITARY INSTALLATIONS.

9 But if you like the part of veterinary medicine that is taking care of puppies & kittens you will be: Educating owners about proper animal nutrition Using laboratory equipment, x-rays and other specialized equipment to diagnose problems Prescribing medicine Delivering babies And performing surgery!!!

10 How do I begin to become a veterinarian? Take as much science as you can in high school and college. Get as much experience with as many different kinds of animals as you can. Get to know a veterinarian and ask lots of questions.
