2 THE HELPING VERBS is, am, are, was, were be, being, been has, have, had do, does, did will, shall, should, would can, could may, might, must THESE ARE THE ONLY HELPING VERBS

3 SHALL Who sais shall? Not me. The British do! Example: I shall pass the queen her tea.

4 THE DEFINITION DEFINITION: a verb that comes before the main verb in a sentence. Together, the helping verb and the main verb form a verb phrase. Sometimes a word-such as not- seperates the helping verb from the main verb. helps main verb express tense, mood, and voice.

6 EXAMPLES I am running because Parkers lobster is chasing me. Helping verb- am Main verb- running I shall go to the store to buy some melons. Helping verb-shall Main verb-go

7 USED IN A SENTENCE? IDENTIFICATION? Helping verbs are often used right before the action verb. If not, they are usually seperated by a word such as not. Helping verbs can be identified very simply. They must be one of the 23 words listed earlier.

8 Note Helping verbs can be used back to back. I will do it.
