3 What is the U.S. vs Nixon? The U.S. vs Nixon was a landmark Supreme Court case in which President Richard M. Nixon was impeached and brought to court for being responsible for a break in at the Democrat National Committee’s offices and recording multiple conversations in the oval office. vs

4 Dick Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States of America, a republican senator from California, and Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Vice President. Nixon was not a very popular president and was not a very likable person.

5 Watergate In 1972, the Democratic National Committee was using the Watergate complex as their headquarters. This is the principal organization governing the United States Democratic Party and valuable information was in this building.

6 The Break-in On June 17, 1972 a security guard at the Watergate noticed the there was tape on several of the doors leaving them unlocked. He called the police and when they found and arrested five men who were searching the offices and tampering with phones and other communication.

7 They were convicted on January 30, 1973. One of the burglars claimed be under political pressure and several checks and donations were found in their bank accounts all made payable to the Committee to Re-elect the President.

8 Impeachment The Washington Post with the help of an FBI informant named “Deep Throat” were able to link the burglars to the White House. Nixon and his party denied any involvement, soon many Nixon aides resigned and senior aides faced prosecution. Aide Alexander Butterfield claimed Nixon had a recording system in the oval office.

9 The tapes were subpoenaed, the White House cited executive privilege. The White House agrees to provide written summaries of the tapes but the offer is rejected.

10 The Tapes The White House finally ordered to release the tapes on July 24. There unexplained gaps in the tapes and certain sections were erased.

11 The Smoking Gun The Smoking Gun tape was released August 9, 1924. This tape revealed that Nixon knew about the initial cover-up and had planned to keep the FBI out of the investigation.

12 Resignation As a result of the charges brought against him and the loss of political support, president Nixon decided to resign. On August 9, 1974 he announced that Gerald Ford
