3 Healthy Weight Intervention Preventative strategies for maintaining a healthy weight are more effective than treatment, although, treatment of excess weight is still very important. Public Health works to: encourage individuals and communities to become more active, make healthy choices about food and maintain a healthy weight

11 Somerset Children and Young People Survey (SCYPS) Spring Term 2014 10,000 children and young people across Somerset participated Conducted with CYP in Years 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12 Perceptions, understanding and behaviours: all health areas Repeated in 2016

12 Key Findings 24% of secondary pupils not achieving recommended physical activity levels (1 hour per day) 22% CYP eating a school meal (54% wider sample) 44% boys access sport after school and 26% girls. Girls reach their peak in terms of being physically active between 5-7 years (age) The proportion of pupils who want to lose weight climbs across the age range - proportion of Year 10 females who want to lose weight is over 60%.

14 Health Improvement Award The Health Improvement Award has been developed to enable schools, colleges and other settings to assess their capability to provide a healthy environment for their children and young people, to identify areas of need in relation to health and wellbeing and to develop appropriate mechanisms for addressing those needs. The Health Improvement Award is for schools, colleges and EY settings Foundation Level Certificate Targeted Intervention Programme
