Biomedical Engineering By Jacob Carpenter and Brandon Lurie

What is Bio medical Engineering? Bio medical engineering is a field that uses engineering knowledge and principles in medicine and biology. It uses the engineering techniques of problem solving and combines them with the medical biological sciences. Some bio medical scientists work to diagnose and treat human illnesses. Others work doing research, designing medical instruments, or working to develop new medical procedures. Bio medical engineering has several specialty area including bio mechanics and bio materials. These two specialties seem to best fit the works of my mentor, Brandon Lurie. ng

What is bio mechanics? Bio mechanics applies mechanics to biological or medical problems. Mechanics is defined as a science dealing with the action of forces on objects. This science works with the effects of various forces such as the flow of fluids in the body or the transfer of chemicals across membranes and synthetic materials. Bio medical research has led to the development of many artificial body parts including the artificial heart and kidney, replacement heart valves, and artificial hips. Bio mechanics has also given us a better understanding of how the organ, muscle, and the bone systems of the human body work.

What is bio materials? Bio materials is the specialty area for bio medical engineering that works on developing and choosing the materials to be used in artificial body parts. This is one of the most demanding and difficult fields in bio medical engineering. The material to be used can not cause any harm to the human body. It is also important that the material will not be damaged by the chemicals of the human body causing failure. In many cases the material must stand up for a life time of use. The materials currently being used include ceramics, metal alloys, and plastics.

Computer science and bio medical engineering Computer science is an important part of bio medical engineering. Computer systems are used for record keeping and working with sophisticated medical instruments. Computer programs are used to design medical devices. The engineers also use computer programs to test the artificial body parts. Brandon Lurie is currently doing this: using computer programs to model and simulate medical devices.

Who employs bio medical engineers? Bio medical engineers work in hospitals, research companies, government agencies and industrial companies. When working for the government the job usually involves product testing and safety, and setting safety standards. In hospitals bio medical engineers advise on using medical equipment and supervise equipment. In research companies bio medical engineers may supervise a laboratory or take part in research. In industrial companies such as W.L. Gore they design and test new products. www.gore.com/en_xx/products/medical/index.html

Summary Bio medical engineering is a science that covers many different areas. It is exciting to see all of the artificial parts that have already been made for the human body. This is an area of science that is being used to extend human life and to improve it. Its interesting to see all of the different specialties that have already developed in this new field. Bio medical engineering is a new science but is rapidly growing.
