3. Take the example:
Mrs. Parker wants to divide 565 new students into 5 new classes. Wow! What a lot of work to do… How can she divide this large number of children?

4. Start by making your array/area boxes:

5. What can you multiply by 5 to get close to 565?

6. I can multiply 5 x 100 = 500

7. Place 500 inside your area model. Place 100 outside your area model.

What’s left?
565 – 500 = 65
How can I get close to 65?

9. 5 x 10 = 50
