1 Long Division Using the Area/Array Model

2 Long Division as Fast Facts
EQ: How can we divide LARGE numbers into groups using the area/array model?

3 Take the example: Mrs. Parker wants to divide 565 new students into 5 new classes. Wow! What a lot of work to do… How can she divide this large number of children?

4 Start by making your array/area boxes:
565 5 5

5 What can you multiply by 5 to get close to 565?

6 I can multiply 5 x 100 = 500 565 5 5

7 Place 500 inside your area model. Place 100 outside your area model.
565 500 100 5 5

8 = 65 What’s left? 565 – 500 = 65 How can I get close to 65?

9 5 x 10 = 50 565 500 100 5 5

10 Place 50 inside your area model. Place 10 outside your area model.
565 500 50 100 10 5 5

11 65 – 50 = 15 What’s left? 65 – 50 = 15 How can I get close to 15?

12 5 x 3 = 15 565 500 50 100 10 5 5

13 Place 15 inside your area model. Place 3 outside your area model.
565 500 50 15 100 10 3 5 5

14 Phew. Mrs. Parker took care of her 565 new students
Phew! Mrs. Parker took care of her 565 new students. It looks like each class will have….

15 Use the numbers OUTSIDE your area model:
= 113 There will be 113 students in each class.

16 Time to check our work! Use the inverse operation: 113 (students)
x 5 (classes) 565 (total student) We are correct!
