3 Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Welcome to the first of a 3-module series on Effective Time Management, a supporting e-learning program developed in conjunction with the Team Lead Development Program! This module is the first stepping stone that will help you in managing your daily activities and put you on the path to achieving your goals. This module is companion to Prioritizing Your Tasks and Managing Your Time. You may complete the modules in any order that you wish; however, all modules must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face learning session. Next

How will you lose weight- eat healthy, exercise? Take a vacationWhere do you want to go? For how long? What do you have to do to take a vacation- save money, schedule time off from work? Asking specific questions, such as the questions listed in this table, can help you focus your goal. Let’s revisit the goals stated earlier…

12 Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific Measurable A R T Back Adding a Measurable criteria will help you determine if you are on track to meeting your goal. This criteria can include dates, precise amounts, or both to help you measure your success.

13 Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Back Now, let’s add criteria to the sample goals of lose weight and go on vacation. Goal #1: Lose weightGoal #2: Go on vacation How can you lose weight? Specific By eating healthy and walking 30 min. daily How much weight do you want to lose? Measurable: 20 lbs. End result: Lose 20 lbs. by eating healthy and walking at least 30min. daily. Where do you want to go? Specific: Hawaii For how long do you want to stay? Measurable: 7 days End result: Take a 7 day vacation to Hawaii.

For example, a goal to lose weight, stated as Lose 20 lbs. in 1 week is unrealistic, not to mention unhealthy! If you set a goal that is out of your reach, it may cause you to get discouraged and to stop setting goals for yourself. However, setting goals that are too easy doesn’t allow you to grow. Attainable, but challenging goals provide the greatest sense of satisfaction when achieved.

Let’s revisit an earlier goal and add a time-bound criteria to the goal, Go on vacation.

She is still getting accustomed to her job responsibilities as a TL, and administrative tasks are consuming most of her time. Tracy realizes that her new team members are not performing as well as they could, and she needs to provide them extra coaching to help them succeed. Tracy has a total of 12 team members, 5 of them hired within the last 2 months. How can she schedule extra time when she already feels overwhelmed? These goals will also be reviewed by your coach, and used to monitor progress throughout the program. Please be sure to complete this assignment BEFORE attending the small-group session.
