Child Labor  How do you think these children felt?  What do you think was going through their mind?  Why would parents make their children work in places like this?  What would you have done if you had to work in one of these factories?

Child Labor  Many factories were unsafe and very dirty.  Most workers were forced to work long hours at very little pay.  Many children were forced to work in these factories so they could help their families make money.  Most immigrant children did not go to school.

Remember the “Newsies?”   Conditions in the factories started being shown by popular newspapers and magazines.   Many were illustrated with photographs showing the unsafe working conditions.

Now predict what you think needs to be done to solve the problems created by Industrialization.

So what actually happened?  Labor unions were created in the US!

What is a Labor Union?  A labor union is an organization of workers who have grouped together to achieve common goals in things like wages, hours, and working conditions.

Labor Unions  Labor unions would work together to get things they thought were fair.  If the managers of the industries did not listen, workers would go on strike.
