3 About this Lesson You are about to be provided with introductory information about a few mythological Greek Gods/Goddesses. This information is not presented with the intent of changing or swaying any current religious views or lack thereof, but rather as a means to reflect upon the historical beliefs held among some Greeks. Throughout the presentation, various links and buttons (of various shapes) have been provided and you should use these to navigate through the presentation. At the end of this presentation will be a quiz intended to test your knowledge of the material presented. Good luck, and enjoy the presentation!

5 Zeus Zeus is known as the king of the gods, and the ruler of Mt. Olympus. His more famous siblings include Poseidon and Hades. He is married to his sister, Hera. Zeus is known for changing his form to seduce women, some of the more famous forms being a bull, a swan, and a golden shower. Zeus keeps dominion over the sky and heaven, and is in charge of the weather, law and order. 6 Hera Hera is known as the queen of the Gods. She is married to Zeus, her brother, who she rules the skies with. She is the Goddess of women, marriage and the starry skies. She is often jealous and argumentative, seeking revenge on those who cross her, including some of Zeus’ many mistresses. She also produced a son, Hephaistos, on her own, but cast him out of heaven for being disabled. 7 Athena Athena is the Goddess of wisdom, weaving, pottery, war, and the defence of towns. Her father is Zeus, who gave birth to her when he had a headache so bad that his head split open and Athena came out, fully clothed and dressed in armor. Athena is also known for her involvement with agriculture, and having invented the plough and rake. 8 Apollo Apollo is the God of prophesy and oracles, healing, plague and disease, poetry, archery and music. He is the son of Zeus, and his sister is Artemis, whom he is very close to. He is known as “The God who punishes and destroys the wicked and overbearing.” and all sudden deaths are attributed to being struck by one of Apollo’s arrows. 9 Demeter Demeter is the Goddess of agriculture, law, order and mystery. She is viewed as the Goddess of the earth. She is the sister of Zeus, with whom she has a daughter, Persephone. She is known for creating fall and winter, because when Persephone was abducted, raped and forced by Hades to remain in the underworld for 6 months every year, Demeter greived through the duration of that time, allowing plants and crops to wither and die. 10 Poseidon Poseidon is known as the ruler of the sea. He is the God of the sea, rivers, flood, drought and earthquakes. His more famous siblings are Zeus and Hades. Because the sea engulfs land, he is seen as the God who holds the earth, and so can shake it to cause earthquakes. During the Trojan war, Poseidon sided with the Greeks because the Trojans refused to pay him after he and Apollo built their city walls. 11 Aphrodite Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, beauty, procreation, and pleasure. Her son, Eros, is also known as Cupid, and he is often depicted with her. Aphrodite is well known for her role in the Trojan War, as she was the Goddess who promised Helen of Troy to Paris in return for the title of most beautiful which she was competing for against Athena and Hera. 12 Hermes Hermes is the God of travel, trade, thievery, animal husbandry, and language, among other things. His father is Zeus, and his mother is the Goddess Maia. He first earns his title as a thief when, only hours after his birth, he left his cradle and went on to steal Apollo’s oxen. Hermes made an instrument out of the oxen’s bodies, which, when given to Apollo, created a friendship among the two. 13 Artemis Artemis is the Goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and wild animals, and girl children. Her twin brother is Apollo. She is known as a sort of counterpart of her brother, Apollo, and, like him, sudden deaths of women are attributed to being struck by one of her arrows. 14 Ares Ares is the God of war, manly courage, civil order, and battle lust. He is the son of Zeus and Hera. He is often described an easily angered, and is depicted as a fierce warrior. Ares is also known for his affair with Aphrodite, who was married to Hephaistos. Hephaistos literally caught the two together in a net. 15 Dionysus Dionysus is the God of wine, festivity, pleasure and vegetation. He is the son of Zeus and Dione. He is often depicted as being young, beautiful and effeminate. He is known for partying, often to the annoyance of the other Olympian Gods and Goddesses. He is also known for siring many mythological creatues. 16 Hades Hades is the God of the Underworld. He is often depicted with his three-headed dog, Cerberus, who guardes the gates of Hell. His more famous siblings include Zeus and Poseidon. He is married to Persephone, who he abducted and trapped in the underworld by feeding her six pomegranite seeds, trapping her in the underworld for six months of the year. Hades was appointed to the underworld by drawing lots with Zeus and Poseidon.
