YES NO YES According to natural rights theory, as described by philosophers such as John Locke, everyone is born with an equality of certain rights, regardless of their nationality. Since they come from nature or from God, natural rights cannot be justly taken away without consent. As the Declaration of Independence asserts, natural (or “inalienable”) rights include “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Other natural rights are protected in the Bill of Rights, including freedom of speech, religion, and press. 2 The Founders believed that it is an important purpose of government to protect peoples’ Natural Rights Natural rights theory is a foundation for constitutional principles such as judicial protection of rights and majority rule versus minority rights, and civic values like respect and responsibility. Belief in natural rights theory led many to civic work and leadership in order to denounce unjust treatment, respectful slavery, racism and sexism as a violation of natural rights The Ninth Amendment addresses those natural rights not specifically listed in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but which the people retain. Documents, including the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, and Letter from Birmingham Jail, refer to natural rights as the basis for protesting unjust treatment of women and African Americans. According to natural rights theory, as described by philosophers such as John Locke, everyone is born with certain rights from nature or from God, called Natural Rights (Inalienable) cannot be taken away. Thomas Jefferson took the philosophy of natural rights from Locke and incorporated it into his famous statement of a peoples’ inalienable right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence. The Governing Body and Its Citizens A Social Contract is the view that mans’ moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among people to form the society in which they live. The Governing Body must Provide Services, Protect and Present Order and the citizens agree to being socially obligated and responsible to protecting the governing principles . According to Locke, a government's job, was to protect life, liberty and, above all, property- Pursuit of Happiness. When Government fails to protect these, it should be overthrown/replaced- and this is the Responsibility of the People.
