Down Syndrome By: Jacob McCarthy

Myths/truths/facts Myth: down syndrome can never be cured. Truth: research on down syndrome is making great strides in identifying the genes on chromosomes 21 that causes the characteristic of down syndrome. Scientists now feel strongly that it will be possible to improve, correct or prevent many of the problems associated with down syndrome in the futuer. There are three types of down syndrome: trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) accounts for 95% of cases, translocation accounts for about 4% and mosaicism accounts for about 1%. Life expectancy for people with down syndrome has increased dramatically in recent decades - from 25 in 1983 to 60 today.

What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is a condition that affects 400,000 Americans. This defect is caused by a full or partial extra copy of the 21 st chromosome. This defect alters the course of development. Some physical traits are low muscle tone, small stature, upwards slant in the eyes, and a single deep crease in the center of the palm. People with down syndrome may posses some, all, or none of the traits.

Positivity in the media A little girl defied all the odds of having down syndrome when she decided she wanted to sing. Many people told her she would never be able to sing because of her condition. Down Syndrome causes speech and language development issues. People with this disorder tend to have lower pitch voices also witch can make it hard to sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpcYnSuf _7s/

Negativity and mockery in the media A woman, kellie, with down syndrome called into a radio station looking for a friend. kellie had dialed the wrong number by accident and didn’t know it. The radio station had though it was a prank and began to make jokes about her. The radio host started making cruel remarks like, “ No, say it real slowly. I want to try to figure this out. It’s a little game.” and “Okay. And, and, and speak SLOWLY. What would you like?”

Stars with Down Syndrome For anyone who has seen the show glee you all know Becky the lovable girl with down syndrome who adores coach sue. Her real name is Lauren Potter. she is an activist for other people who have down syndrome.

How would I educate about Down Syndrome I would implement a learning section in the health classes about down syndrome. Health class is all about learning how your body function and the affects that different things can have on your body what better way to teach teenagers about a disorder then the place where they learn about their body anyways.

Response to questions. How would you define down syndrome? And what do you know about it? Everybody who answered this question had the same idea that it was genetic and a few people knew that it affected the 21 st chromosome.

What did I learn Ii learned that there is not only one type of down syndrome and there may be new ways to treat it. Also a lot of people seemed to have a very positive response to the questions witch shows that people are more open in accepting new disorders.
