DOWN SYNDROM Stacy Rubio, Austin Haire, Kaylee Ables

2 KEEP CALM ITS JUST AN EXTRA CHROMOSOME
Down syndrome is a hereditary disorder that is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, resulting in 47 chromosomes rather than the normal 46. Chromosomes are “packages” of genes, which determine how the baby’s body forms during pregnancy and how its body functions in the womb

3 Children with Down syndrome have distinct features, although they may not have the exact same features there are other common features such as: small hands, larger tongues, short neck, upward slanting eyes, unusual shaped ears. They may also have poor muscle tone, broad short hands with a single crease in the palm, relatively short fingers, and excessive flexibility.

4 TYPES OF DOWN SYNDROM Trisomy 21 Translocation Down syndrome
95% of people have this particular kind of Down syndrome. With this type, each cell in the body has three separate copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual three. only 3% will have this kind of Down syndrome. This happens when an extra part or a whole chromosome 21 is present, but it is attached or “trans- located” to a different chromosome rather than being a separate chromosome 21.

5 TYPES OF DOWN SYNDROM Mosaic Down syndrome This affects about 2% of people with Down syndrome. Children that have this type some of their cells have three copies of chromosome 21 but other cells have the typical two copies of chromosome 21. These children may also have the same features as other kids with Down syndrome but may have fewer features of the condition because of the presence of some or many cells with the typical number of chromosome.

6 RISK FACTORS Women’s chances of giving birth to children with Down syndrome increase with age (35 and higher). This is normally due to the fact that as women get older so do their eggs The chances for women to conceive a child with Down syndrome at age 35 are 1 in 400. By age 45 it is 1 in 35.

7 complications Children with Down syndrome may have a variety of complications such as: Heart defects Leukemia Dementia Sleep apnea Obesity

8 treatments Early intervention is considered to be the best treatment there is for children with Down syndrome. Because children with Down syndrome take twice as long to sit, crawl, walk, or talk, physicians recommend starting these intervention programs at an early age. These programs have specialized employees that work with children by doing sensory, motor, and cognitive activities with them. Getting these children involved at an early age may give them the best chance at success. Physicians will normally recommend facilities that offer these programs and other organizations that are within the area.
