6 Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes Root – Contains basic meaning of a word. Prefix – Comes before the root. Suffix – Comes after the root. Roots, prefixes and suffixes can help you figure out the meaning of words.

7 Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes (Cont’d) Example of a root or prefix: ab – away from. Example: absent. alt – high. Example: altitude. Example of a number prefix: dec – ten. Example: decade. Example of a suffix: Ee – one who receives. Example: employee or payee. Try Activity 7.1 in the book.

8 Motivation To Expand Vocabulary Motivation helps you to develop your vocabulary. Remind yourself of the benefits of having a good vocabulary. What are the disadvantages of not building your vocabulary?

9 Activities for Expanding Your Vocabulary Flash cards – Write the new word on one side of a 3 by 5 card and the definition on the other. Matching words with the definitions. Try Activities 7.2-7.3 in the book.

12 Practicing Your New Skills You have learned many new ways to build your vocabulary. Learn one word a day and you will learn 1,460 words during your four years of college. Keep building your vocabulary and you will have a great command of the English language.
