1 The Lord’s Prayer To illustrate one way to pray the Lord’s Prayer, I have often asked people to, “picture the words of the Lord’s Prayer on a computer screen. Then, pick out one word, underline it and put it in blue font. That says it is a ‘hyperlink’ that will take you to other ‘pages, with other truths’ about that word.” People have asked, “Where is that screen?” Well, here it is. I trust it will assist you in deepening your relationship with Jesus. Even though it is fairly extensive, it certainly is not exhaustive. Advance to the next slide, move the mouse until the curser appears and click on the word(s) of your choice. (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

2 The Lord’s Prayer Our - Father, in heaven; let Your - Name be holy,
let Your - kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven let Your - will be done, Give us - this day our daily – bread. Forgive us - our debts - as - we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation - but Deliver us from the evil one. For the kingdom and the power and the glory belong to You, forever! Amen. (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

3 Our…/Us… Note the value of praying in the plural
Jesus gave this prayer using plural pronouns (“our” and “us”) It was the regular practice of the early church to prayer together: Acts 1:14, 2:42, 4:24, 12:12, Colossians 1:3-4, 9-14, 4:2-4 There is great value in praying in agreement with others: Matthew 18:19 It is and will be one way we pray in heaven: Revelation 4:8-11, 5:9-14 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

4 Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

5 Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

6 Acts 4:24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

7 Acts 12:12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

8 Colossians 1:3-4 3We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

9 Colossians 1:9-14  9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 10 Colossians 4:2-4 2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 11 Matthew 18:19 Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. Return to Our…/us Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

12 Revelation 4:8-11 8Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." 9Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:  11"You are worthy, our Lord and God,  to receive glory and honor and power,  for you created all things,  and by your will they were created and have their being." 13 Revelation 5:9-14 9And they sang a new song:  "You are worthy to take the scroll  and to open its seals, because you were slain,  and with your blood you purchased men for God  from every tribe and language and people and nation.  10You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,  and they will reign on the earth.“ 11Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12In a loud voice they sang:  "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"  13Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" 14The f our living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped. 14 Father… This is the way Jesus typically addressed God in prayer:
For example, Luke 10:21, John 11:41, John 12:27-28, John 17:1, 5, 11, 21, 24-25, Matthew 26:39, Luke 23:34, 46 He is our Father by virtue of creation: Ephesians 3:14-15 He is our Father by virtue of our salvation: 1 John 3:1-3; Luke 11:11-13 Jesus is our “Brother”: Hebrews 2:11 There are benefits of being His children: Romans 8:12-17, 21; Galatians 4:1-7 There are responsibilities of being His children: Responsibilities: Matthew 5:43-48; Ephesians 5:1-2, Romans 8:14 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

15 Luke 10:21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.” Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

16 John 11:41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.” Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

17 John 12:27-28 27 Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.28Father, glorify your name! Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

18 John 17:1 and 5 1After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. 19 John 17:11 and 21 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

20 John 17:24-25 24Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 22 Luke 23:34 and 46 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. 24 1 John 3:1-3  1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears,we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 25 Luke 11:11-13  11Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! 26 Hebrews 2:11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

27 Romans 8:12-17  12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co- heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 28 Romans 8:21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

29 Galatians 4:1-7  1What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. 4But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. 30 Matthew 5:43-48  43You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

31 Ephesians 5:1-2  1Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Return to Father Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

33 Heaven… Heaven not only tells us about the Father’s location, but also His nature: We are created in His image: Genesis 1:26-27; James 3:9; Psalm 100:3 He is the uncreated Creator : Genesis 1:1, John 1:3; Colossians 1:16, 17; He is far greater than His creation: See Job 38, 39, 40 and 41; Proverbs 8:12-31; Isaiah 40:12-29; Romans 11:33-36 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

41 Proverbs 8:12-31 2 "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. 13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil;  I hate pride and arrogance,  evil behavior and perverse speech. 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine;  I have understanding and power. 15 By me kings reign and rulers make laws that are just; 16 by me princes govern,  and all nobles who rule on earth.  17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. 18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. 19 My fruit is better than fine gold;  what I yield surpasses choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, 21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full. 22 "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old;  23 I was appointed from eternity,  from the beginning, before the world began. 24 When there were no oceans, I was given birth,  when there were no springs abounding with water; 25 before the mountains were settled in place,  before the hills, I was given birth, 26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world. 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was the craftsman at his side.  I was filled with delight day after day,  rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. 42 Isaiah 40:12-29 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,  or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?  Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,  or weighed the mountains on the scales  and the hills in a balance? 13 Who has understood the mind [a] of the LORD,  or instructed him as his counselor? 14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,  and who taught him the right way?  Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding? 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales;  he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. 16 Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. 17 Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing. 18 To whom, then, will you compare God?  What image will you compare him to? 19 As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. 20 A man too poor to present such an offering  selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple. 21 Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  Has it not been told you from the beginning?  Have you not understood since the earth was founded?  22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.  He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,  and spreads them out like a tent to live in. 23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind weeps them away like chaff. 25 "To whom will you compare me?  Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. 43 Romans 11:33-36  33Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34"Who has known the mind of the Lord?  Or who has been his counselor?” 35“Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” 36For from him and through him and to him are all things.  To him be the glory forever! Amen Return to Heaven Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

44 Your… We cannot “say” or “prayer” the two words or ideas, “Your” and “my” at the same time. He wants us to seek Him, His ways, and His kingdom first. 50 Name… This is a reflection of His nature, His character, His reputation: He has many titles but only two names: In Old Testament, Yahweh (LORD): Exodus 3:13-15 – I AM “I am there” In New Testament, Jesus: Matthew 1:21 – Yahweh Saves – “And I care” He is very concerned about how people view and treat His name: Exodus 20:7; See also, Exodus 6:7, 9:16; 1 Kings 20:13, 28; Ezekiel 36:20-23, 39:6; Isaiah 43: 3a, 11,15; Joel 3:17; Daniel 9:19; Psalm 111:9 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

65 Holy… Holiness is God’s most outstanding attribute:
See Isaiah 6:2-3 and Revelation 4:8 Several things are referred to as Holy in Scripture: i.e. Ground,- Exodus 3:5; A Day,- Exodus 20:8; Priests,- Exodus 29:1a; The Most Holy Place, - Exodus 26:33b; even Incense - Exodus 30:37 We are not to treat holy things like we treat other things. God’s holiness speaks more of His distinction, or uniqueness than His perfection. There is none like Him. 105 Earth… The three requests of the first half of this prayer are already being accomplished in heaven. The place where they need to be fulfilled is here on earth. Heaven is the template of our best prayers and earth is the target. But it is not just “on earth,” it is also in “my world.” “Lord, let these things be done here in my life and the places I touch.” There are two “place” words in this prayer; “earth” and “heaven.” Part of the purpose of prayer is to let earth affect heaven and heaven affect earth. 163 Our Debts… This is another way to acknowledge that we have all sinned. We are all debtors to God: Romans 3:23 There is always at least one Godly way to respond to any situation: For example, Matthew 5:43-48; Mark 12:29-31; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:29-32; Philippians 4:8 When we don’t respond in that way, we “borrow against” the Godly response and become its debtor: Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? 170 As… This word “as” is a very significant comparison. Our willingness to forgive is one condition of our own forgiveness: This is a clear teaching of Jesus. Consider the following passages carefully: Matthew 6:14-15; Mark 11:25; Luke 6:37; 11:4 and especially Matthew 18:21-35 We should treat this topic as seriously as Jesus words did.  21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" 22Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[b] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' 27The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. 29"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.‘ 30"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." 176 We Forgive Our Debtors We are never more like Jesus than when we forgive. How do we forgive others? Remember the offense: We don’t have to work at this, do we? Recognize it as sin: Jesus forgives sin, not mistakes or bad habits: Matthew 1:21, 1 John 1:9 Remember the cross: The cross is the solution to your sin and this sin: 2 Corinthians 5:21, Release it: This is the essence of forgiveness: Matthew 18:27 Reverse it: Bless instead of curse: Luke 6:27-28 Reapply it: Forgiveness is both and act and a process Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

182 Lead Us (not)… The primary request of this line is that Our Father would lead us. He is a wonderful Leader: Exodus 15:13; Psalm 23:2-3; Romans 8:13-14; Galatians 5:25 When we follow His leadership, we end up in closer relationship with Jesus: John 15:26; 16:14 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

189 Temptation… Our temptation does not come from The Father, it comes from our own evil desires: Notice the pattern of James 1:13-15 Contrast this with what Jesus does – 1 John 3:8; Psalm 37:4, James 4:8; John 8:31-32; and Romans 6:4 The Father provides a “way of escape” from every temptation: 1 Corinthians 10:13 Notice that “the way” the Father provides is Jesus Himself: John 14:6 Note these other Scriptures related to prayer and temptation in Jesus’ life Luke 22:31-32; 40; 44; Matthew 26:36-39 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

190 James 1:13-15  13When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 202 Deliver Us… God is a Deliverer.
This request reflects Jesus’ passionate prayer in John 17: See verses 11, 12, and 15 It is essential for us to understand when to resist and when to remove ourselves from the temptation: We are to flee (run from) temptation – 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22 We are to fight against (resist) the evil one – Ephesians 6:10-13; James 4:7 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

203 John 17:11-12 and 15 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 206 Ephesians 6:10-13  10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 208 the evil one… The request is not deliverance simply from evil, but “the evil one.” We should be very aware that the devil is not simply an evil one, but the evil one. This is the normal way that he is referred to by Jesus – Matthew 13:19, 38; John 17:15 Paul – Ephesians 6:16, 2 Thessalonians 3:3 John - 1 John 2:13-14; 3:12; 5:18-19 Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

209 Matthew 13:19 and 38 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. 216 Kingdom… It is not our kingdom that we are seeking to advance, but His. See the earlier reference to the kingdom. This increases our anticipation and confidence as we pray. We are praying that the King, Himself will rule in this situation. Even though this line is probably not in the original prayer, the truths certainly are biblical. 218 Power… As we pray, we are not depending on our power for the answers. We are depending upon His power. Jeremiah 9:23; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5; Ephesians 1:18- 20; Philippians 3:10 This also gives us great confidence when we pray. Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

223 Glory… As we pray, we are seeking to see more than just answers. We are seeking to see more of His glory here on earth. Ephesians 3:20-21; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Revelation 4:11; 5:12 Again, this increases our confidence when we pray. We have no assurance that we are worthy to see our prayers answered. 227 Forever… There are two “time” words in this prayer: “today” and “forever.” Part of the purpose of prayer is to let today be affected by eternity and eternity be affected by today. Our best prayers are not those that, when answered, only affect the here and now, but are those that, when answered, affect eternity. Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved

228 Amen… This word means more than simply, “I agree.” It is a word of receptivity. As we conclude our prayers, this word does far more than simply let others know we are finished. It means we anticipate receiving the answers to our prayers because we have prayed according to the pattern He gave us. Return to Prayer (c) 2010 Dennis Fuqua - All rights reserved
