2 Standard SS8H6: The student will analyze the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Georgia B. State the importance of key events of the Civil War; include Antietam, Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Union blockade, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to Sea, and Andersonville

3 Fort Sumter South Carolina government ordered North out of their state. Union ignored them, so Confederate army opens fire on Fort Sumter Two days of bombardment, but no casualties Union removes themselves from fort Outcome: Confederate Victory Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee secede.

4 Union Blockade 1861 Lincoln declares a blockade on the South Prevents southern ships from entering or leaving southern ports Hurt South’s economy by not allowing them to export cotton

5 Antietam Occurred on September 16-18, 1862 George McClellan and Union forces attack Robert E. Lee in Maryland Many attacks and counter attacks throughout the three days No winner, but September 17 was the single bloodiest day in American History

6 Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln issues this in September 1862 Stated that as of January 1, 1863 all persons held as slaves in any state of the Confederacy “shall be thence forward, and forever free.” Made the war officially about freeing the slaves

7 Gettysburg Took place on July 1-3, 1863 Troops accidentally ran into each other and began battle Became known as greatest battle in North America Confederate losses were 28,000 killed, wounded, or captured. Union had 23,000 casualties Union won the battle. Gettysburg and Vicksburg gave the Union momentum in the war.

8 Chickamauga September 1863 Union Army captures Chattanooga, Tennessee and decide to continue further south Battle would take place in Chickamauga. This was the first time the war came to Georgia Confederacy gets a victory

9 Sherman’s March to Sea Began on November 15 and finished on December 25, 1864 William Tecumseh Sherman leads his Union forces into Georgia First major event is Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. In this campaign causes major damage to railroads and burns the city Also hits other major targets, but caused major damage to private property ($100 million total) Takes control of Savannah and sends telegraph to Lincoln presenting Savannah as a Christmas present This march broke the South’s will

10 Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865 Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant This would end the Civil War and the Union wins
