Upgrading Remote Access to the Analog Model Power System Amrit Dahal Ryan Litzko Client: Dr. Brian Johnson, ECE Dept. ECE 544: Control Systems and Critical Infrastructure 1

Background What is Analog Model Power System (AMPS)?  A system composed of various units involved in power protection and monitoring. Transmission Model Hardware Multiple Power Sources Variable Impedance Fault Phase shifting transformer with tap changer control Monitoring and Protection System Internet Security Gateway, switches, relays, Remote Control Unit (RTU), ruggedized computer Ethernet connection Fault Controller Serial connected 2 Courtesy: Dr. Brian Johnson Senior Design Project Description AMPS Communication Spring 2014 Senior Design Review

Communication Diagram Courtesy: AMPS Communication Team Spring 2014 Senior Design 4

Objectives System upgrade to SEL3530: Real Time Automation Controller (RTAC) from SEL2030: Communication Processor. Access to fault initiator to place controlled faults. Download event record files University Information Technology Services (ITS) and College of Engineering (CoE) Cyber Security Compliance Additional opportunities to conduct lab exercises 5

Old Remote Control Setup - Login website allows access to fault initiator. https://mps.ece.uidaho.edu -Schedule-SEL 2030 -Change Password -Fault Controllers System Setup: -Server host on Windows XP (with Windows 2003 server) -Firewall hole created in UI server to allow connection to MPS Remote Control server host computer 6

New System Setup Remote desktop access Server update Fault controller 7

Remote Desktop Access Remote Login Via Team Viewer Free and simple to use (drag and drop – downloading) Works with Microsoft, Apple, and Linux Host computer has command Host must be on, software must be enabled, connection can be terminated at anytime via Lab TA. Secure connection Whitelisting ID, password protected, encryption based same level as https Other features (IM and video conference) 8

Server Update Now using a windows 7 server Host website Lab schedule Google calendar Documentation 9

Fault Controller Connection not yet established Lack of documentation Communication specs Baud rate, parity, etc. Connection process Terminal opens empty Keying sequence 10

Benefits of New System Updated to server to supported OS No more firewall hole, more palatable to ITS. Access to all features of the Model Power System Easier to implement new lab assignments 11

Drawbacks of New System Third party software reliance Schedule must be manually updated and confirmed by TA Fault controller not yet available 12

Lessons Learned Setting up a web server HTML PUTTY HyperTerminal Documentation is important 13

Future Work New scheduler to bypass lab TA maintenance requirement. Establish communication with fault controller and implement into new system Integrate AMPS system with Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) 14

Questions/Comments? 15
