5 Intonation in Yes/No Questions Conversation A: Judy: That wasn’t his first time in New York. Mark: Really? Had he gone before? Which has RISING intonation, the sentence or the question? Which has RISING-FALLING intonation?

6 Intonation in Yes/No Questions Conversation B: Judy: That wasn’t his first time in New York. Mark: You mean he’d gone before? A yes/no question is asked by using rising intonation with normal sentence word order We use this form of question when we want to show surprise or to confirm something we think we already know. We usually use RISING intonation with yes/no questions and RISING- FALLING intonation with information questions.

9 Putting It All Together Directions: With a partner, write a dialogue using the situation on the index card. Your dialogue must include: –Past perfect tense –Past perfect progressive tense –Questions asking for understanding –Sentence indicating understanding –Sentence indicating lack of understanding You will read your dialogue to the class!

10 Peer Review of Dialogue Directions: Listen to your classmates’ dialogue. Complete the peer review sheet with what you hear. They will perform the dialogue twice!

11 Writing: Coherence Directions: Look at the underlined words. How are they important to the paragraph? By the time Shirley Temple was six years old, she had already won an award. However, she remained popular for only about six years. After that, her films lost popularity.

12 Logical Connectors Logical connectors can show: –Contrast: but, in contrast, on the other hand –Sequence: then, next, later –Examples: for instance, for example –Result: so, therefore, as a result –Reason: because of this, as one can see Logical connectors can be used within paragraphs and between paragraphs Can you think of others?

13 Logical Connectors Directions: Read “Write: Coherence” at the bottom of page 41. With a partner, read and complete Exercise 7 and Exercise 8 on page 42 Writing exercise: –You are interested in attending a conference at Columbia University on language learning strategies. Write a letter asking for information. –Follow the format of a formal letter (page 30, Unit 3) –Include logical connectors when necessary.
