Common Core State Standards & North Carolina Essential Standards

Times are Changing

Where is CCSS Taught? Common Core is being taught in every state except in Alaska, Nebraska, Texas, and Virginia. Minnesota has only adopted Common Core English Language Arts

Reflects the changes in society Better prepares students for college and careers It is being taught in most of the United States Focuses on learning expectation for students Covers English Language Art and Math from Kindergarten through High School

Are aligned with college/work expectations; Are clear, understandable and consistent; Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;

Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and Are evidence- and research-based.

In English Language Arts…  Strands: Number and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis and Probability, Algebra  COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The learner will understand and compute with rational numbers.  Objectives 1.01 Develop and use ratios, proportions, and percents to solve problems. 1.02 Develop fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers. Analyze computational strategies. Describe the effect of operations on size. Estimate the results of computations. Judge the reasonableness of solutions.  Strands: Number and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis and Probability, Algebra  COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The learner will understand and compute with rational numbers.  Objectives 1.01 Develop and use ratios, proportions, and percents to solve problems. 1.02 Develop fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers. 18 In English Language Arts… The number System 7.nS  Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.  1. Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.  b. Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts. 19 In English Language Arts…  Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.  Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. 25 In English Language Arts…  Changes in Social Studies 8 th grade will remain essentially the same  The main focus of the course will be the critical events, personalities, issues, and developments in the state and nation.  Time period from the Revolutionary Era to contemporary times. (Although exploration and pre- revolution is emphasized)  Although the major focus is state and national history, efforts should also be made to include a study of local history.  Changes in Social Studies 8 th grade will remain essentially the same  The main focus of the course will be the critical events, personalities, issues, and developments in the state and nation.  Time period from the Revolutionary Era to contemporary times.
