Teaching for Transfer of Learning

Learning is often not the outcome of all our Teaching

Teach so students will have meaningful learning experiences

Let’s try this!

What is the purpose of text complexity? To insure that students are prepared to independently and proficiently read and comprehend the variety of text found in college and careers, students need sustained exposure to increasingly more complex texts.

The standards’ approach to text complexity Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension The reading standards place equal emphasis on the sophistication of what students read and the skill with which they read.

Metacognitive Markers Read “Why Text Complexity Matters” (from Appendix A), using the following metacognitive markers: ? A question I have… 0 Thoughts that I’m pondering… ! An important point

Discuss at your table…. Why does text complexity matter?

Module 4: Instructional Materials Intent: To explore effective utilization of current instructional materials to support learning of the Common Core State Standards. Key Learning: Alignment of standards to the current ELA instructional materials Start with standards that are completely new to a grade or significantly different in complexity Decide on a comprehensive approach—review one of the standards from each strand OR review one whole strand at a time Target Audience: K-5 Teachers 6-12 Teachers
