Blood Pressure

What is the lub dub sound your heart makes?

Lub Lub = tricuspid and bicuspid valves closing at the same time after the blood has been squeezed into the ventricles from the atria

Dub Aortic and pulmonary valves closing at the same time when the blood is being squeezed from the ventricles to either the aorta or pulmonary artery

Blood pressure is the force that your blood puts on your blood vessels as it is pumped out of your heart

Blood pressure is measured in the arteries Systolic pressure = when the heart contracts (both the lub and the dub) Diastolic = when heart relaxes Why do you think we measure blood pressure in the arteries and not the veins?

Questions? Do you think your blood pressure is constant? What do you think causes it to change?

Measuring general blood pressure

Measured by an electrocardiogram

Pulse Vibration or waves made by pressure exerted by blood on blood vessels Throbbing of our arteries as a result of our heart beat – in most people the pulse is an accurate measure of heart rate Normal pulse rate for a healthy adult, while resting, can range from 60 – 100 beats per minute. During sleep this can drop to as low as 40 beats per minute Active heart rate can be as high as 200 – 220 beats per minute Pulse rates are generally hgher in younger people

Common Pulse Points Radial Pulse Ulnar Pulse Carotid pulse Brachial pulse Femoral Pulse Temporal Pulse
