Seed Supply System Through Kenya Forestry Seed Center (KFSC) By Peter M. Angaine

Introduction KFSC established in 1985 with the support of GTZ up to 1993 Since then the center has been fully supported by GOK KFSC is a sub-programme of KEFRI, which is a parastatal under the ME&NR Mandate is to collect and distribute high quality tree seeds for all planting programmes

Seed collection KFSC has a network of 8 collection centers distributed in various ecological zones of Kenya Each center has a Forester and at least 6 trained seed collectors/climbers Seed is collected from selected and established SS, 60% of which are exotic plantation species Seed sources comprise >1,000 ha (mainly in gazetted forest reserves) Collects about 7,000Kg annually from >100 species

Seed distribution Until 2 yrs ago seed distribution was centralized at KFSC Hqts Muguga Since 2005 KFSC has embarked on the following strategy to improve on seed supply; –Decentralized seed supply to Gede, Maseno & Londiani RRC –Started seed distribution in small packets of 50g (Eucalyptus grandis, Acacia xanthophloea and Casuarina equisitifolia) –Creating awareness- adverts and exhibitions in ASK shows and farmers field days on the availability of quality tree seeds Following the above strategy the volume of seed supply has increase from 3,000 to 4,500Kg last yr.and it is still rising.

Seed distribution Cont’d Seed distribution in small packets Advantages Affordability Less wastage of seeds Accessibility to quality seeds by small scale farmers Availability of sowing instructions and other important information on the packets Tree seed information leaflets –Leaflets issued to clients with every seed lot purchased for more information

Seed quality control Seed collected from SSS and ESS under strict supervision Seed tested in line with ISTA guidelines Every seed lot supplied bear detailed documentation Seed for export market inspected by KEPHIS and issued with P/certificate KFSC-registered seed dealer

Challenges and Way Forward Inadequate seed sources –Selection and establishment of more seed source –Protection of the existing seed sources Marketing –Creation of awareness –Continue decentralizing seed distribution to all RRC –Packaging in small packets –Recruitment of distribution agents
