2 Standards & Essential Questions  Standards:  Students will use basic greetings, farewells, and expressions of courtesy.  Students will demonstrate Novice-Low proficiency in oral and written exchanges with respect to proper pronunciation, intonation, and writing mechanics.  Essential Questions:  How do you greet someone formally and informally?  How do you say goodbye?

4 Formal vs. Informal  You use the formal form when talking to adults. For example: you would talk in a formal form with teachers, parents, grandparents, etc. This shows respect.  You use the informal form when talking to your friends (amigos), people your age or children.

5 Formal Vs.Informal  Hola, ¿Cómo está usted? - Hello, How are you?  ¿y usted? - and you?  ¿Cómo se llama? - What is your name?  Hola, ¿Cómo estás? - Hello, How are you?  ¿y tú? - and you?  ¿Cómo te llamas? - What is your name?
