3 Who is doing the “liking”? Indirect Object Pronouns: answers the question “to whom?” (a mí)(a nosotros) (a ti) (a él, a ella, a usted) (a ellos, a ellas, a ustedes) me te le nos les The words in parenthesis are optional to clarify and/or stress to whom it is pleasing.

4 En Español…: The word order is actually “backwards”: The indirect object pronoun comes first:Me Then the verb:gusta Finally the subject of the verb:español. Make it negative by adding “no” before the IDOP. NO me gusta español.

5 Gustar: how it works In English we say: “I like Spanish.” En español decimos: “Spanish is pleasing to me.” In English: “I” is the subject “like” is the verb “(Spanish)” is the direct object En español: “(Spanish)” is the subject “is pleasing” is the verb “to me” is the indirect object

6 “Gusta”=singular subjects =infinitives For now, all you need to know is… “GUSTA, GUSTA, GUSTA”

(A mí) me gusta bailar. (A Elena) le gusta cantar. (A Nosotros) no nos gusta nadar. (A Carlos y a Miguel) les gusta comer. ¿Les gusta leer (a Uds. )? (A ti) te gusta escribir.
