2 Why? Objects in the world are not perfect. When creating three dimensional models, the inclusion of dirt is an item’s baptism. While some scenes call for more dirt than others, texturing objects to reflect use is a skill worthy of the attention of any aspiring artist.

3 PROCEDURALS Procedurals are mathematical functions which coat patterns over the surface of a material. Multiple procedurals can be used on the same object to create a grungy look.

5 TEXTURE MAPPING Assigning a file to the color node of a object’s material. One approach to texture mapping a large surface of uncertain dimensions is to use a seamless tile. One can also import an image to be used a single time as a decal or painting.

10 PAINT EFFECTS One can also use 2D paint effects to paint grunge directly onto the model in Maya. Render menu set » Paint Effects » Make Paintable Texturing » 3D Paint Tool □ Assign/Edit Textures

12 OTHER METHODS  Superimposing a translucent, colorized version of an ambient occlusion map onto the item’s texture map.  Using light and a transfer map to assess areas with a higher concentrations of dirt.

13 COMBINATION & EXPERIMENTATION There is no wrong answer. A combination of methods often renders a pleasing look.
