2 Why study in the UK? UK Universities have an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research UK Universities carefully regulated by Government Many Universities (such as my own) very experienced in running successful Mathematics programmes Many Scholarships available – more details later! A fair and transparent UCAS entry system means that entry depends on attainment only and not on race, colour, creed, religion etc.
3
Points to Consider Choose the right course Courses available – range, combinations Entry requirements Structure of course Methods of teaching and assessment Placement opportunities Employment prospects after graduation Choose the right place Campus v city location Social life – clubs, societies Facilities available Accommodation Support services Cost of living What is the student life like?

Writing a strong personal statement Why do you want to study your chosen subject? This should be a substantial part of your personal statement, taking up approximately 50 – 80% of the 47 lines allocated to you. Ensure you have carefully researched your course/subject and then provide evidence that you have the skills required Include information such as: Why does the subject interest you? Who or what has inspired you? What aspects of the course do you want to explore further? Do you have a career in mind? What else have you done that will contribute to the course and university (i.e. hobbies, clubs, achievements)?
6
Top 10 tips Start early Read UCAS “how to apply” booklet Plan the structure of the statement (47 lines = approx. 500 words) Start with key headings, then list bullet points, then turn these into full sentences Avoid starting too many paragraphs with “I” Draft and redraft in Microsoft Word Read it aloud to see how it sounds Spell check and proof read Keep a copy for later reference in case called to interview Do not plagiarise!
