Jenna Oberman Digital Editing in Magazines vs. Newspapers By Jenna Oberman Comm. 115

Jenna Oberman Why I chose this topic Focus on photography Photography in print – field of mass comm. What I want to do with this major Difficulty finding thesis at first Photography too broad; many other things too small Searching school database – using many different word combos Finally deciding on topic; one I care about; one with real argument Able to make thesis

Jenna Oberman My Findings Articles on methods of digital enhancement Opinion articles Some argue my point, some opposite Information articles on field with newspapers, and on magazines Use all helpful ones, incorporate them with my views It is okay to digitally alter photos used in magazines, but not photos in newspapers

Jenna Oberman Photography Advances Digitally Technology advancing rapidly in world (business and at home) Photography as an art form, but can be digitally changed Photoshop At home, for fun Scitex In professional fields: magazines, newspapers Extremely advanced, sophisticated – pixel by pixel Can not see changes made, extremely tempting

Jenna Oberman Magazines Tabloids Altered; not a problem; people unaffected Advertisements Also not a problem Not meant to tell a story/truth Persuade – buy this product; give in to temptation (& people know this) Competition with other products

Jenna Oberman Magazines War with other magazines – people buy on impulse, what cover picture looks better With technology advancements & fast paced world, competition getting fiercer One exception – should not alter models Selling the product, not the person Not good for public perception of beauty

Jenna Oberman Newspapers Have always had small enhancements For good reason (lighten, etc.) – it is okay Scitex is very tempting Alterations unseen, people don’t know Should not digitally alter photo Distorts reality Photo relates to story – should be truthful to its origin; illustrate story Public relies on stories and photos to be real Otherwise it becomes untrustworthy, lose credibility

Jenna Oberman Magazines vs. Newspapers Conclusion Newspapers meant to deliver the truth, report reality, tell what’s going on, concrete Photos should reflect this, people rely on photos to tell same truth, illustrate story Magazines meant to sell product (and magazines themselves), to tempt people, competition Photos may be changed for this, always have been, and people know this Two completely different types of print
