Mini Lesson By: Megan Beck Jenny Gilpin Cori Patterson Becky Steere

1 st Grade GLE standards Science: Science: – Strand 5: Processes and Interactions of the Earth’s Systems (Geosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere) F. Climate is a description of average weather conditions in a given area due to the transfer of energy and matter through Earth’s systems. – A. Observe, measure, record weather data throughout the year (i.e., cloud cover, temperature, precipitation, wind speed) by using thermometers, rain gauges, wind socks – D. Identify patterns indicating relationships between observed weather data and weather phenomena (e.g., temperature and types of precipitation, clouds and amounts of precipitation)

1 st Grade GLE standards Math: Math: – 1. Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems and processes of measurement A. select the appropriate tool for the attribute being measured (size, temperature, time, weight)

Phase of the Learning Cycle: Engage: Through reading the book, students will observe the use of different ways to measure weather circumstances in real life. – Students will compile a list of different things they measured in the book. Explore: – Students will collect data on precipitation, temperature, and wind speed.

Overview of Mini-Lesson: (leads into a weather observation activity) After reading the book, students will make a connection between the word measurement; how it was used in the book in relation to science and how they have been using it in math. Students brainstorm a list of all the different types of measurements used in the book.

Connection to prior articles: We connected to the “Literacy in Learning Cycle” article through the integration of language arts with science that can provide engaging ideas and rich extensions for science lessons.
