1 Chapter 6 Creating with Carbon The Importance of Molecular Structure

2 Organic Chemistry The chemistry of most carbon-containing compounds. Key ideas: Structure dictates function Organic molecules can be manipulated in systematic, repeatable and predictable ways

4 Example VSEPR Structures

5 More VSEPR Structures

11 Water is “Polar” It has one “+” end and one “—” end. Poles on one water interact with oppositely- charged poles on other waters. A 3-D network of intermolecular forces is the result. Most important among these is hydrogen- bonding. Water is, therefore, a liquid (with many unique properties) at ambient conditions.

12 Exercise 6.3: Impact of Structure on Vit. A (top), C (bottom) Dosage

13 Stearic Acid

14 Oleic Acid

15 Linoleic Acid

16 Steroid 17-member common skeleton

17 Steroids: Estradiol (left) Testosterone (right)

18 Optical Isomers – alanine (Hydrogen atoms deleted for clarity in ball and stick model)
