3 History * Lacrosse began in 1636 by Jean de Brebeuf a Jesuit missionary. *1926-First women’s game was played at St. Leonard’s School in Scotland *1877-First college team in New York University to play Lacrosse *1882-Laurenceville School in New Jersey nation’s first high school team *At least 48 Native American tribes played this sport.

4 Statistics *Nearly 25,000 men play lacrosse at over 400 colleges and universities. *Over 5,500 women participate in lacrosse programs at 240 colleges and universities. *There are 11,500 players (7,500 men & 4,000 women) nationally play lacrosse. *Youth participation ranges from 5 to 17 years of age, with over 4,500 programs in the U.S. 21 st Century 19 th Century

6 Rules *Lacrosse is played by two teams of 10 players. (A goalkeeper, 3 defensemen, 3 midfielders, 3 attack men) *Generally, games are 48 min. long, with 12 min quarters, 2 min. break between quarters, and half time is 10 min. long. *Teams change sides between periods. *Body Checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball. Contact must occur from front or side, above waist and below shoulders. *A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent’s crosse with a stick check. *Players may run with the all in the crosse, pass and catch the ball. Only goalkeeper may touch the ball with his hands.

9 Equipment BallsSticks *Made of hard rubber.*Box Sticks *White or orange color.*Wooden Sticks *Plastic Sticks Player’s Uniforms *Players wear shorts and a shirt in the teams color. *Women don’t wear protective gear, except for mouth guards and sometimes gloves and shin guards. *Men must wear padded gloves, a helmet, chin guard, and elbow guards optional. *Goalkeeper may wear kneepads and a chest protector.
