Augmented Cognition Articles 1. Introduction – Schmorrow & McBride 2. Overview of the DARPA Augmented Cognition Technical Integration Experiment – Jogn, Kobus, Morrison, & Schmorrow 3. Neurocognitive Monitors: Toward the Prevention of Cognitive Performance Decrements and Catastrophic Failures in the Operational Environment – Thomas & Russo

Augmented Cognition What is it? To utilize neurophysiologic measures in concert with workload reduction algorithms as part of an effort to improve information processing ability (3) A constellation of desires, concepts, and goals aimed at maximizing human cognitive abilities through the unification of humans and computational systems (1)

Augmented Cognition Why is it important? About 80-85% of accidents in the Military are caused by human error directly attributed to failures of cognitive performance (3) Ability to increase net thinking power (1) Ability to contribute to clinical applications for purposes of restoration and remediation of neurological disorder or damage (1)

Augmented Cognition USAMRMC CPJDRP NMFCT – 5 Year Plan Goals Define ideal neurophysiologic measures for use by Future Force Warriors in Mounted and/or dismounted platforms Identify neurophysiologic indices capable of measurement through currently available unobtrusive miniaturized technology Begin identifying strength of correlations between neurophysiologic measures and specific operational performance metrics

Augmented Cognition USAMRMC CPJDRP NMFCT – 5 Year Plan Goals (cont.) Continue identifying significant correlations between neurophysiologic measures and specific operational performance metrics and refine algorithms to procude “impairment indexes” of biological stressors Make assessment and write proposal delineationg objectives and milestones of a new Army Technology Objective (ATO)

Augmented Cognition USAMRMC CPJDRP NMFCT – 5 Year Plan Goals (cont.) Develop an ATO for real-time monitoring of neurophysiologic measures prior to and during operational performance to allow assessment of biological cognitive state Plan test and evaluation activity with most promising neurocognitive monitoring technology
