11 EUMETCast – Africa: status & approach
EUMETCast available over Africa since ~2004 Bandwidth: 2.55Mbps net (3.6 Mbps raw data rate) Around 250 users, with stations Types of users: National meteo services, regional/continental climate services (ICPAC, ACMAD, etc.) Regional entities, often with training mandates (AGRHYMET, RCMRD, etc.) MoA, MoE and related national entities, UN branch offices Fire management services (e.g. AFIS) Universities and research centers Private people and private sector (few) Demand-driven: real policy and user needs Capacity building projects User ownership Long-term commitment and sustainability

12 Demand-driven (user and policy) Capacity Building project
Overall approach Demand-driven (user and policy) Capacity Building project User ownership Sustainable dimension Long-term commitment We are elaborating our activities, data and products, in answer to needs expressed by users in Africa – no data push, but real and structured demand We have a structured user Community in Africa, that can elaborate clear user needs.

13 EU-AU Development projects – Infrastructure and CB
PUMA – , 11M€ (8th EDF), implemented by KMD 53 PUMA receiving station deployed 350 African technicians trained 6 Pilot Projects (Outlook activities) -> AMESD AMESD – , 21M€ (9th EDF), implemented by AUC All 53 PUMA stations maintained and upgraded 58 AMESD “environmental” stations deployed Training (1000 experts trained) Environmental services MESA – , 37M€ (10th EDF), implemented by AUC All PUMA and AMESD stations maintained and upgraded 3 new PUMS station to be deployed (South Sudan, Somalia, ASECNA) ~50 new MESA station to be installed Training Environmental and Climate services EUMETSAT provides in-kind contribution, free of charge, to the projects
