3 Sentence Types Write each sentence in your notes. Mark the subjects, verbs, conjunctions, AAAWWUUBBIST words, dependent clauses, and independent clauses.

4 Let’s Practice  After the rain, we decided to go fishing and took our canoe to the lake.

5 Let’s Practice  We were able to catch enough fish for dinner, and then we went to bed in our makeshift tents.

6 Let’s Practice  Those clouds promise rain, so we hurried up and left before we got caught in a flash flood.

7 Let’s Practice  We decided to return before dark since we had only gone a mile from camp.

8 Discuss Author’s Note

9 Author’s Note  Paragraphs 1-2: Mark key information about Christopher McCandless.  Paragraph 3: Circle verbs.  Paragraph 4: Underline Krakauer’s statement of purpose and subject of text.  Paragraphs 5-7: Mark words that reveal Krakauer’s attitude toward McCandless.  Paragraph 8: Identify contrasting ideas.

10 Exit Slip – Discussion Points  1. Paragraphs 1-3: What kind of person do you think Christopher McCandless was? Use specific details to support your answer.  2. Paragraph 4: Why did Krakauer write Into the Wild?  3. Paragraphs 5-8: How does the general public feel about Krakauer?

11 GENRE CONVENTIONS of the Author’s Note  What does GENRE CONVENTION mean?  What are some genre conventions of the author’s note?  1st person  Directly addresses the reader  Explains the motivation and/or goals for writing the text  Gives background on the development of the text/the writer’s thinking  Makes the writer’s bias explicit  Bracket and label these conventions in the margin.

13 Into the Wild: Chapter 1  Into the Wild begins in medias res (in the middle of things).  Why might Krakauer begin the book in the middle of things rather than at the beginning chronologically?

14 HW: Read and annotate chapters 1-3 (pp. 3-23) Write the page number where the answer can be found next to the study guide questions. Write the question number next to the answer in the book. Mark character development, symbolism, foreshadowing, ideas that seem important, dates. DUE LESSON 15 (EXPECT A QUIZ)
