2 Topic & Theme ~This Virtual Field Trip will identify who discovered Antarctica, as well as when they discovered it.

3 Learning Standard ~Grade 6 New York State Social Studies: Standard 3 – Geography Standard 3 – Geography 1. Geography can be divided into six essential elements which can be used to analyze important historic, geographic, economic, and environmental questions and issues. These six elements include: the spatial terms, places, and regions, physical settings, human systems, environment and society, and the use of geography.

4 Student Outcomes Students will be able to: -explain how and when the first people discovered Antarctica. -describe where Antarctica is located on earth.

Antarctica is: -1.4 times bigger than the United States. -the southern most continent on Earth. -it also has the lowest recorded temperature on Earth at -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit. -many people visit Antarctica, but no one lives their permanently. 8 Explorers of Antarctica There were three main explorers who visited Antarctica by ship. ~Roald Amundsen, December 1911 ~Robert Falcon Scott, December 1911 ~Sir Ernest Shackleton, first in 1901- 1902, second in 1907-1909, and his third excursion on the Endurance in 1915.
