1 CERES ++ Gender and Development in Strong ICT Research Environment Workshop 8 April, 2008 Tylebäck

2 Long Term Goal Better and more important... –research results –innovations –education Increased competitiveness and visibility Therefore the project is an important part of the development plan of CERES and the entire School of IDE

3 Starting points When you are involved in (any phase of) technology, product and service development, you also put a gender perspective on it Embedded computing and communication systems are introduced in all kinds of products and services, in all areas of society CERES has a better gender-balance than most other ICT research environments; this makes it easier for us to understand the important issues Results from gender research can be applied in order to further strengthen R&I environments

4 A long-term perspective (VINNOVA’s view) Improved innovation capability Better gender balanceNew products, services, and companies Increased awareness of gender issues New actorsIncreased competitiveness Changed action patterns More efficient processes Sustainable growth Changed processesNew application areasJämställt samhälle Years0 2 4 6 8 10

5 The pre-study and The project The ongoing pre-study aims to identify the important issues and... (TODAY!) develop a plan for the project... which, if funded, will go on for 4 years,... with a total budget of 3 – 4 MSEK

6 The four questions in the pre-study 1.The ´end user´ of our technology is changing from being other technical systems to being humans. In order for innovations/products to be well adapted to both women and men, a gender consciousness is required. How develop such a consciousness? 2.How can gender issues be focused in our collaboration with partner companies in order to broaden the contacts and fins new perspectives? 3.What methods and tools can be developed to deal with the male culture in undergraduate and Master education, in particular when male students meet female teachers? 4.How to increase women´s interest in computer science and engineering and recruit them to education and research, which is needed to secure women´s active role in forming our future society and its technology?

7 Program 1330 Marita Svensson, project leader from Fiber Optic Valley in Hudiksvall presents the approach within the VINNVÄXT project “Gender Perspectives in the Innovation System Fiber Optic Valley” 1415 Presentation of the pilot study "Teknikvetenskap, jämställdhet & genus", Johan Rydstedt and Agneta Hansson 1430What gender perspectives have we found so far within HH’s research and education environments within ICT? Presentation of the initial interview study, Agneta Hansson, Suzanne Almgren Mason and Emma Börjesson 1530 The project application to VINNOVA. What do we want to do – and how?
