2 Objectives Discuss the decrease in the prevalence of pseudorabies in swine Understand that health regulations are health management practices used to prevent the spread of the disease

3 Affects central nervous system Highly contagious Herpes-type virus Also called Aujeszky’s disease “Mad itch” Not zoonotic

4 Primarily affects Feral swine Domestic swine Abnormal hosts Cattle Sheep Goats Cats Dogs Raccoons Opossums Skunks Rodents

5 Transmission Direct contact Nasal discharges and saliva Infected swine contaminate feed, water, bedding, and other objects that the infected pig can directly contact, also the air is contaminated

6 Symptoms Fever Weight loss Anorexia Trembling Paddling Death CNS effects Incoordination Temperament changes Paralysis Difficulty walking Convulsions

7 Young Piglets Mortality rate as high as 100% with little or no symptoms Can die in 3 to 7 days of obtaining the virus Pregnant sows Abort Abort fetuses Weaned pigs Respiratory illness Fever Anorexia Weight loss Dyspnea Coughing Sneezing Adult swine No symptoms Respiratory difficulty

8 Prevention Biosecurity practices Keeping feral hogs off of the property that domesticated hogs are on Using proper sanitation procedures Vaccinating

9 REPORT IT Eradication/Control Contact private veterinarian or state or federal animal health officials Infected herd will be placed under quarantine Test, retest, and removing or incubating infected animals until the herd is cleared of disease Or de-populate the whole herd
