MS3308 New Media Portfolio 1.Introduction to module aims and objectives 2.Introduction to assessment 3.Week-by-week

Sem B Module leader: Tony Sampson Thursday Workshop 1.00 – 5.00 AVA.1.28 Supervision meetings Sem B Thursday Workshop 1.00 -4.00 WB.1.11 Module leader: Tony Sampson Workshops with Jeff Ellis Supervision meetings

MS3308 New Media Portfolio You work under supervision and independently to develop creative ideas into a practice based portfolio. Work relates concretely to research proposed in level 2 (MS2306) and continued in level 3 (MS3307).

MS3308 New Media Portfolio Project work is organised around a self defined brief. You will manage time and resources effectively by drawing on planning, organisational, and project management skills (MS2303).

MS3308 New Media Portfolio Your work will demonstrate an understanding of media forms and structures, audiences and specific communication registers, all contextualised within relevant theoretical issues and debates (MS2306 and MS3307).

MS3308 New Media Portfolio You are encouraged to experiment, as appropriate, with forms, conventions, techniques and practices Employ production skills and practices to challenge existing forms and conventions and to innovate.

3 areas of competence Demonstrate competences in multimedia and interactive media design, technology and practice, and research. To organise project work around a self defined brief intended to closely mirror a realistic production process and learn from experiences gained at level 2 (MS2303)

Production/Practice Demonstrate an understanding of how in creative industries individuals, or collaborative project- oriented teams, – Operate and complete their work – Manage time, personnel and resources – Draw on planning organisational, and project management skills

Technology and Practice Produce work showing capability in – Operational aspects of new media production – Technologies – Systems – Techniques and professional practices

Presentations Developing portfolio work for wider audiences – Peers – Supervisors – Employers – Public – Press

Consideration of usability and accessibly Demonstrate an understanding of – Interactive/Multimedia forms and structures – Users and specific communication registers

Consideration of usability and accessibly Be adaptable, creative and self-reflexive in producing output for a specified user group

Assessments There are three assessments for this module CW1: Planning, Design and Technical Specification (Individual or Group) Weighted at 30% overall 1.CW1 (Strategy and Scope) DEADLINE ONE: 14th Nov- 2013 2.CW1 (Structure and Skeleton) DEADLINE TWO: 28-Nov-2013 3.CW1 (Surface and revisions of the above) DEADLINE THREE: 06th Jan 2014 CW2: Practical Implementation of Design Weighted at 40% overall – Submission on last week of teaching – Fri 16 th May 14 – at student show. CW3 Presentation of Portfolio of Work (in relation to thesis written in MS3307) Weighted at 30% overall – Present on last week of teaching – Thurs 15th May 14.

CW1: Planning, Design and Technical Specification (Individual or Group) Weighted at 30% overall CW1 (Strategy and Scope) DEADLINE ONE: 14th Nov- 2013 CW1 (Structure and Skeleton) DEADLINE TWO: 28-Nov-2013 CW1 (Surface and revisions of the above) DEADLINE THREE: 06th Jan 2014 Referring to the user experience design model introduced by JJ Garret (see reading list) you will produce a document that covers each of the five elements listed on next slide. You will need to refer to the original text and discuss each stage with your supervisor before starting out. The final documents should function as a working document which visibly supports cw2 practical work. One copy to the first supervisor, the other to the second supervisor.

CW1: Planning, Design and Technical Specification (Individual or Group) Weighted at 30% overall Three Deadlines

Achieved over 3 deadlines Strategy (20%) Scope (20%) Structure (20%) Skeleton (20%) Surface (20%) 14/11/13 28/11/13 06/01/14

Next Week Come prepared to discuss each stage Strategy (20%) Scope (20%) Structure (20%) Skeleton (20%) Surface (20%) Chapter One – Meet the elements: http://www.jjg.net/elements/pdf/elements_ch02.pdf Book website http://www.jjg.net/elements/http://www.jjg.net/elements/

CW2: Practical Implementation of Design Weighted at 40% overall Friday 16 th -May-14 (Student show - tbc) Final submission of all production work following the student show on Friday 16-May-14 Discuss appropriate submission with supervisors. Typically though, submit two CD- ROMs - One to the first supervisor, the other to the second supervisor. The CDs must include clearly labelled and organized file structures using recognized conventions. Each CD will contain: A copy of the project work including all relevant production files, examples of coding, assets and preproduction documentation. The files MUST BE structured according to conventions and accessibility. Poor organization will result in non- submission. The practical must have a web presence and a URL. For example, a Wordpress blog that accompanies and traces the research project.

Cw2 Marks awarded for Demonstration of effective use of multimedia authoring tools and other application used in the production Application of appropriate principles of interaction and multimedia design, especially regarding standards, quality usability, accessibility and effective user feedback. Application of relevant programming principles and best practice, including commenting, testing and debugging code efficiently Products will demonstrate ease of navigation and functionality Appropriate consideration of user-friendliness and transparency in terms of use

Cw2 Marks awarded for

Evidence that principles of new media production, design and management have been considered and understood Legibility of text and hypertext if appropriate Appropriate levels of user interactivity Incorporation of an appropriate variety of elements of digital media

Cw2 Marks awarded for Clarity of graphics, sound and/or video if appropriate Evidence of consideration of audience, of appropriateness of product for target audience and of testing in accordance with predefined methodological approach Stylistic appropriateness for content and stylistic consistency and coherence: the product feels ‘together’

CW3 Presentation of Portfolio of Work (in relation to thesis written in MS3307) Weighted at 30% overall Thurs 16 th May 14 Students will work individually (or in groups) to produce a “mixed media” presentation of their portfolio of work and completed research project. Each student will have 1.10-15mins to discuss theoretical ideas and concepts in relation to project 2.A space to present portfolio of work and completed research project

CW3 Marks will be awarded for Presentation of portfolio of work to teaching staff, supervisors, peers, and wider audiences A creative, innovative and thoroughly original mixed media presentation Evidence of preproduction and production work clearly related to the student thesis carried out in MS3307.

CW3 Marks will be awarded for Presentation of fully functioning examples of practical new media products that relate to research objectives and specific field of study Inclusion of diagrams, illustrations, storyboards and flowcharts which demonstrate the development of the project, in a professionally presented mode Evidence of working to briefs and deadlines, including managing concurrent projects

CW3 Marks will be awarded for Reflection on one's own learning, and constructive use of supervisor feedback
