IRIS (1978-2006) Historical Reflection through Visual Analysis Co-authors: Judith Molka-Danielsen (Molde University College, Norway) Matthias Trier (Technical University of Berlin, Germany) Vadim Shlyk (Technical University of Berlin, Germany) Annette Bobrik (Technical University of Berlin, Germany) Markku I. Nurminen (Turku University, Finland) IRIS (Information Systems Research in Scandinavia) Conference is an annual meeting for researchers in Scandinavia. A social network of co-authorships and general research collaboration has emerged.

The complete IRIS 1978-2006 author and co- author relationship network. Goals of the analysis: –aggregate global network measures –dynamically visualize the co- authorship network development over selected time periods –identify and visualize the most prominent actors over time and their ego-networks –capture the nature and characteristic of the research topics over time through visualizing the network of keywords found in the conference paper titles.

Top Paper Count: Subset of 256 actors with a minimum of three contributed papers. Ole Hanseth Karl Heinz Kautz Carsten Sørensen Lars Mathiassen Markku Nurminen Lars Svensson Kristin Braa Pertti Järvinen Peter Axel Nielsen Per Flensburg Author Paper count Mathiassen29 Nurminen23 Järvinen22 Sørensen21 Flensburg19 Kautz19 Nielsen17 Svensson17 Nuldén15 Hanseth15 Urban Nuldén

Who works together? The 256 most active authors are colored due to the country they come from: light blue: Finland blue: Norway yellow: Sweden red: Denmark green: non-Scandinavian All authors from one Country Total paper count Sweden574 Finland424 Denmark232 Norway194

Time in Reverse: degrees of separation in time 2007 Papers are shown in color Video of the forward evolving network.

Combined ego-network among the top 5 active authors: includes 84 authors in 198 relationships. The lighter nodes represents those top 5 central persons. Interestingly, only two of the top6-top10 active actors are found in direct relationship to the top5. The rest are positioned in different sectors of the network meaning that several independent collaborations arise. 12-Markku Nurminen 4- Pertti Järvinen 30-Per Flensburg 58-Lars Mathiassen 160-Carsten Sørensen Active PeriodAuthor Paper Count 83-04L. 9 Ego-network among the top 5 central authors first vs. last years. Node 12 was central in 1st period. Node 58 in 2nd. Node 160 was in a very small peripheral component, but was very central position starting in 1993. Node 343 is the most connected node in 4th period had a first co-authorship link in 1997. There are obvious lifecycles of activity. Although three out of the top five authors have never collaborated directly, their respective groups of co-authors remain very separated. 12-Markku Nurminen 4- Pertti Järvinen 30-Per Flensburg 58-Lars Mathiassen 160-Carsten Sørensen 160 58 12 4 30 343-Lars Svensson

Line Charts of keyword occurrence (%) (trends) across time: decreases noticeably over time. This highlights reduced coverage of the selected top twenty and indicates increased pluralism and heterogeneity: The few initial topics differentiate. Co-authors, who employed the term information (1978-2006) term information (1978-2006) in their papers, indicating the spread of these terms over time. Co-authors, who employed the term knowledge (1985-2006) in their papers, indicating the spread of these terms over time.

The IRIS co- authors network 1978-2007 Summary: A major benefit of dynamic visualization is the abilty to examine the network relationships at different scale and from different perspectives.
