2 What is aquaculture? Production of aquatic animals and plants where at least one phase of the life-cycle is controlled Over 30 species are commercially cultured in Hawai`i

3 Rationale U.S. imports 80% of its seafood > 50% of all seafood consumed is farmed World aquaculture production increasing ~15-20% annually Hawai`i aquaculture annual value ~$37 million ($25 million production, $12 million research and technology) Demand for non-food products growing rapidly (pharmaceuticals, pearls, food additives)

5 WHAT IS EXTENSION AND OUTREACH? Designing activities that effect behavior change through constituent-driven programs focused on outcome-based objectives using a variety of educational processes and techniques over a continuum of time. (Murray and Wilkins, 2000)

6 Extension Activities Business Client Services - farm visits (general, first-response disease consultation) - information transfer, referrals - R&D needs, connect with science community Pubic Information (includes some business clients) - response to first inquiries (consultation, referrals) - information initiative - workshop series - newsletter - web site and browsing shelf materials Research and Development - response to business needs, wishes - demonstrations of appropriate technology - research, education initiatives Academic and Public Service - review manuscripts, proposals - mentor, speak to community groups

8 Extension staff have a role in education from k-University A 2006 poll of UH Aquaculture Extension Faculty revealed: total of 14 graduate students being supported either directly or indirectly by aquaculture extension faculty Partnerships with educational institutions include Ecuador, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Thailand, U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. EDUCATION
