1 University of Minnesota Molecular & Cellular Biology Building June 1999 PROJECT DESCRIPTION l Molecular & Cellular Biology Building (MCBB) for 70 principal investigators and staff, classrooms for instruction. l The new MCBB is located on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. It is positioned on the east side of the site, currently occupied by Lyon, Owre, and Millard buildings, and flanked on the west by Jackson Hall. Complete demolition of Lyon, Owre, and Millard will be required in order to facilitate new construction. l 140,000 assignable square feet / 230,000 gross square feet. l Estimated project cost »$70,000,000 l Estimated construction cost »$55,250,000 l Anticipated construction completion »December 2001

4 University of Minnesota Molecular & Cellular Biology Building June 1999 SUMMARY OF NEEDS l Current research and educational facilities are outdated and inadequate. l Quality research and academic facilities enhance the recruitment and retention of faculty of world-class stature. l The faculty and students are currently spread out across two campuses, hindering collaboration.

5 University of Minnesota Molecular & Cellular Biology Building June 1999 l Creation of a major landscaping focal point within the Academic Health Center, creating more welcoming access to the area. l Creation of an identifiable entrance for the Health Sciences area including a “front door” along Washington Avenue. l Improvement to the traffic movement system in, along and through the Health Sciences area. l Incorporation of external and internal spaces encouraging collegial communications between research faculty and students.
