Content Southampton Solent University Digital documents Institutional repository Digital videos Questions

Southampton Solent University A new university (2005) 16,000 +students Undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research degrees Full time, part time, distance learning, blended learning Student cohort wanting flexible access to university resources

Digitisation – where it all started With a brand new trial licence from the CLA which allowed us to scan and upload material in … …. short loan originally – photocopies of articles and chapters …. Moodle (myCourse) our VLE– and within the reading list on line package Learnbuild – links to digitised material

Short loan collection 1. Photocopying our own stock 2. Obtaining copyright cleared extracts of non-library stock from British Library In the same way ‘digidocs’ were born

What we can do The CLA now allows us to scan our own material and upload it within the guidelines of the licence. Originally only UK published material, but with the end of the trial in 2008 we were allowed to scan US stuff as well. Our scanning increased …

The ‘digidocs’ took off in 2008

There are rules!  All documents to be archived at the end of each academic year  All published works to be declared to the CLA annually  A front sheet bearing the full citation and copyright declaration must accompany each document  5% rules of one chapter or article as with photocopying

Access for the students Learnbuild - A reading list service provided by the library. myCourse – Links can be embedded in the weekly lecture notes on the VLE The licence allows us to place an electronic link from the reading lists and/or myCourse to the document – Great for distance learners and part time students.

What it means to the students Readings are available 24/7 on and off campus No need to hunt for books which may be being used in the library Any missed lectures or readings can be accessed retrospectively Any questions……..?

Extra information We have 2 hp Scanjet 5590 scanners and 1 Plustec OpticBook 3600 at present Adobe Acrobat 9 is installed on 3 pcs We create the frontpage in Word and convert to a pdf so that it can be easily altered if used again

New project for this/next year – the Institutional Repository! Funding has been made available for an Institutional Repository We have already begun digitising our U/G dissertations We hope to have the software - ePrints – in place by the start of the 2009 academic year

Digital videos Audio collection includes commercially produced videos and off air recordings Collection for use by university staff and students Once VHS, then DVD and now digital videos Copyright means only able digitise off air recordings

The rules: ERA Plus licence The ERA Licence covers scheduled free to air broadcasts: BBC TV & Radio, ITV Network services, Channel Four (inc E4, More 4 and Film4), Five Television, S4C It also applies to any other licensed broadcast services Not on demand eg BBC I player ERA Plus – allows off campus use of digital content Full Details on www.era.org.ukwww.era.org.uk

Implications Recordings can be viewed through a VLE Student must be enrolled at the University (authentication check) Student must be in the UK when viewing (GeoIP check) Some channels not signed up to ERA (eg Open University- allows digitisation but on campus only) and also grey areas (eg subscription channels)

Off-air recording technology Planet e-Stream software - www.planetestream.co.ukwww.planetestream.co.uk Off-Air freeview recordings programmed with epg 6 channels concurrent recording Have to wait for decoding Can digitise existing VHS recordings – summer project Provide links via Aleph/Primo catalogue
